Bought this one off of the auction page of the main Croatian comics site (stripovi.com) earlier in the week: It just arrived in the mail yesterday. It collects roughly the first two years of the daily Spider-man strip, so lots of great art by Romita. I've been wanting this one for years, but never wanted to spend too much money. I ended up paying a little over $6 for this, which I count as a great deal.

I don't really like selling comics on eBay, but I recently realized I had a sought after Star Wars Omnibus and decided to sell it. With the sale's money (and a bit more!), I bought comics for the first time in months. Very nice. I particularly like that Hillman book. They had some great covers in that series. Like most Hillman titles, the stories were fairly cheesy, but the artwork was pretty good. I love old western comics. You are right saying the stories are often cheesy though. The greatest western of all time is Blueberry by Jean Giraud (Moebius). I can't recommend it enough. Great art, great stories and incedible characterization*. *That's an english word, right?

I fixed it for you (bold print above, I think it may have been a simple typographic error).
I am familiar with Lt. Blueberry, and I think he is a great character.

I had Canteen Kate #2, the cover was all Baker but I think there was an assistant on the interiors as it didn't look like classic Matt Baker. Still a good comics, I think aimed at G.I.s during the Korean War. I really need to get that Bravo book someday.

So I have been on a few creator kicks lately-Kubert, Toth, Frazetta, etc. and this has focused on 50s comics when most of them were active. Well. lo and behold what was part of Lonestar's (not so) secret sale last week, but 50s comics, and they had a bunch of very affordable reader copies of books by some of those readers, so I snapped up a small bunch that arrived today. I might be stepping on Crimebuster's toes here, but they had a bunch of low grade issues of Boy Comics with Joe Kubert art on the lead feature that I picked up... as much as I love CB/SH-K's Crimebusters, it will be fun to read some of the original tales of Chuck and crew. These all range between issues 110 and 118. Next up, a couple of books with Toth art, these aren't 50s books, but from the late 40s, issues 41 and 47 of Heroic Comics and then a few more Toth books, a pair of issues of Four Color form the 50s, the adaptations of Sea Hunt and Darby O'Gill and the Little People with Toth art on both, and Bop #1 an anthology of music-oriented comix put out by Kitchen Sink in the early 80s that includes Toth's story Taps (the main character of which is featured on the cover of Genius Isolated) which Paul Fricke listed as one of the top 10 Toth stories to read in the second episode of his Toth In Depth podcast, which piqued my interest in the story. And then some reprint anthologies-when researching Theakston's Buried Treasure series that I picked up the first issue of, I discovered Calber had done a series also called Buried Treasure as well featuring a bunch of 40s and 50s comics featuring Frazetta, Toth, John Severin and others. The 4th issue is an all Frazetta issue. Also there is the one shot Cosmic Book #1 that features Wood and Toth reprints... and two more books, Captain Action #2 and the last issue of Truman's Scout stuff I needed, War Shaman #16... -M

Crimebuster said here were quite a few bad ones of those Boy comics. Man , I love those Captain Action covers. At less than $4 a pop for Golden/Atomic Age books, I'll take a chance on the quality of the stories on those Boy Comics. All have Kubert art, so thees that at least, and a few have early George Tuska and Dick Girodano art jobs as well, so there's interesting stuff even if the stories fall flat. And yes, the Gil Kane covers for Captain Action are amazing. -M

This is one of my favorite eras on the book - not objectively the best, but I like it a lot - and it's also the run my series Crimebusters is based on. Chuck goes off to college in #107 and most of the stories from that point are more boys adventure mystery with school drama mixed in than they are crime stories. You'll recognize most of the Crimebusters supporting cast from these issues. #75-96 or so has a lot of stinkers. Mostly because Crimebuster is relegated to one backup for awhile as lesser strips get the focus. As a general rule, if Crimebuster isn't on the cover, you should avoid it.

Here are most of my newest pickups from the last few weeks. There was a big sale at a local shop recently, so I took advantage and picked up some of the pricier books that have been eluding me. I've been actively collecting Batman/Detective and the Claremont X-Mens from the 80s lately, and have really enjoyed reading through them. I actually had that Wolvie-Sabertooth 2 parter as a kid, so it's been cool to revisit. My Amazing run has been mostly in the back seat recently, as I've been reading all of these old Bat and X books, but I did manage to pick up a few.

That Incredible Hulk 340 brings back some memories. I've never been a real fan of the comic, prefer the Hulk Magazine (which featured Moon Knight) but I remember Wizard pricing that book rather highly. I spied it as part of a bargain mix on Ebay and got it for less than $3 in NM from a seller called Uncle Bubba, who didn't seem to care what books were valued at. I also got the first appearance of Rocket Racoon for about $2.50. And those are the only 2 Hulk comics post 1975 that I own. I do have some random 12c-20c cover books but I got those mostly because they were in great shape and had an opportunity to get them for next to nothing...
Also got some of the Topps bubble gum cards from the tv series....

Where Lou Ferrigno had a "bad hair day" in every single episode.
