People used to talk about how bad hair and clothes styles were in the 70s, but I would say the 80s has it beat hands down. No, the 90's. The 80's are forgiveable, most of the time, imo, but there is no excuse for 99% of the 90's. Ewwwwww. I dunno--more than just about any decade, when I watch an 80s movie, the fashions take me right out of the story. What's weirder is that in a lot of 80s movies, there's like representatives from each group; like in Return of the Living Dead, you got a group with the punk kid, the preppy kid, the new wave kid, the gang kid, though in real life you'd never see people like this hanging out together.

Did anyone actually dress like that in real life, though?

Unfortunately, yes.
Cei-U! I summon the fashion faux pas!

This video is very helpful in clearing up which hairstyle belongs in which decade:

Thanks to the camp craze of the 60's, this is what DC turned the Blackhawks into. I loved these as a kid, never tried them as an adult, but this was my intro to the 'hawks. Reminds me of how good the 80s series was too.

Yes, the 80's series was great.
I'd like to see a return of the Hawks, Sgt. Rock, Firehair, Tomahawk, Gravedigger, etc.

Where can I find one of those ear shirts?? "... with this shirt my enemies will know that I can both hear everything they do, and that I'm also immune to ridicule"

Yes, the 80's series was great. I'd like to see a return of the Hawks, Sgt. Rock, Firehair, Tomahawk, Gravedigger, etc. Gravedigger's a supporting character in GI Zombie. I'm not all that familiar with the original incarnation, so I couldn't tell you if it's a complete revamp, the same character years after he had fought in the war, or a descendant.

I haven't read that yet, though I'm going to eventually. Here's the original from the 70's :

DC has always had the best non-superhero guys. Gravedigger, Warlord, Enemy Ace, Sergeant Rock, Mademoiselle Marie, Unknown Soldier, Captain Fear, Anthro, Tomahawk, Scalphunter, Jonah Hex, Arak, Son of Thunder... just a never-ending parade of cool characters.

Did anyone actually dress like that in real life, though? Not where I came from, but apparently they really did, in some places.

This video is very helpful in clearing up which hairstyle belongs in which decade: The 1980 really stood out for its awfulness, IMO - in this video, anyway. 2nd worse, 1940. I also disliked the bow-shaped (I think they called it that?) lipstick on the 1920. I wonder about the accuracy, though: the 1970 one looked a bit too close to the later 70s, with its Farrah Fawcett-influence. What was that style called where it's brushed back on the sides - wings? No, feathered hair, something like that.

**cracks up**As I've gotten older, I've realized that EVERY ERA'S fashions and hairstyles look goofy in retrospect. It's what young people do to "show their individuality".

The odd thing was that the 80s were also so intolerant of retro fashions. You HAD to look 80s or you were not acceptable. I had to wear hand-me-downs like turtle necks that were the height of fashion again in the 90s, but I got severely bullied for them in the 80s.
One thing I liked about the 90s was that suddenly, if you wanted to wear bell bottoms again, you could. If you wanted to wear a hat and tie and a 40s buzz cut, you could. We raided thrift stores and vintage fashion stores and the only thing you could definitely NOT wear were the 80s neon leg warmers.
