Read a few odds and ends today.. one was my Tales of Suspense #40 I got a while back and didn't want to touch... decided to touch it . Did Kirby REALLY do the art? he's credited, but the style is very un-Kirby like.. unless he was doing it in his Romance book style or something. Funny how it's really just a Tales of Suspense monster story with a super hero tossed in.. I know we've talked about that before, but it was neat to see it in action. The back ups were fun, predictable, but pretty fun.. One was an alien that tries to go back in time to take over and gets busted by a different alient who's in charge of watching the timeline (sounded familiar....). The other was an bad artist in search of a short cut to a masterpiece that gets what's coming in the end. The others of interest were 2 promo books. One was the Superman Radio Shack promo. It's a full comic by Bates/Starlin, and it's actually pretty good. It has a bit of computer history in it, which is fun, and a pretty good story with Major Disaster as the bad guy. IT's clearly an ad of TRS-80s, but also a fun comic. The 2nd one was a PSA from Marvel from 1994 sponsored by Pizza Hut. It was a bit thin (16 pages, no ads), with Evan Skolnick on story and very rushed looking Tom Morgan art. It featured a bad guy with Electric powers that was upset his mom died of Lung Cancer and tears up a convience Store selling cigarettes, as causes general chaos. It features Spider-Man, Human Torch, Firestar and Iron Man (who give a little speech about addiction at the end). Weird set of heroes, but Morgan had the Armor and Firestars 90s NW costume right, even if the art seemed rushed.

Does Avengers Forever count? That if it does.

I definitely don't feel like there was ever an official leader in New Mutants... Sam was too worried about controlling his powers and Dani was too inconsistent character wise, sometimes she was a Claremont amazon like Storm and sometimes she was doubting she could do anything. I always felt like Kitty should be the leader, but that never really happened.. she just hung out now and then. In Modern times, it seems like Sunspot is the leader now (Though that's all got mixed up with C list Avengers thanks to Hickman), or maybe he and Sam are co-leaders, but then they usually defer to Magik if she wants them too, so I guess it hasn't changed

I'm always a little jealous at you European folks having so many extra options to read . While I do love our American shared Superhero universes, it's unfortunately that they BECAME comics, so that there's little room in the public consciousness for anything else. That has changed some over time, but still doesn't seem to extend to Europe, I guess we need a hit cartoon/TV show of something to bring them in the mainstream as what happened with Manga.

Big month for me with 66 books read (hey, that's a lot for me!) and 12 reviews written. Highlights for me included reading Black Hole, The Great Darkness Saga, Lee/Kirby's Thor, revisiting Simonson's Thor, finishing my run of U.K. Disney comics, and stumbling upon some truly satisfying early Post-Crisis Nightwing and Batgirl stories that I had the pleasure of reviewing. A very very good month, indeed! The Chuck Dixon Nightwing stuff is pretty good.. I don't remember alot of details, but I definitely pulled it for quite a while an enjoyed it.

I picked up the current Savage Avengers story... feels like they've made it Exiles. It's fun having Jake Gallows and Doom 2099 around, but it's far from a classic.
125 comics for me.. pretty good amount of stuff. Alot of hoopla, I'll definitely continue with Thorgal, and maybe some more Lucky Luke too. I got through a couple trades while keeping up with my pull list, which is always good. I definitely enjoyed Black Max (though don't need to get any more) and Spider-Woman has been good, though not as connected to the later Wolverine appearances as I would have thought.

Absolutely... though they've been better this year. Grant Williams has never committed a foul in his career according to him. But Tatum's been better at playing instead of whining.

I'm hearing him say 'Dark' alot. Its also super weird they're doing 4 films from the old regime first, but somehow working them in?
I honestly thing the super hero movie extravaganza might have run its course. (Marvel too)

It's absolutely hilarious that Lebron is whining about not getting calls. Warms the cockles of my heart.

Reading Young Justice on Hoopla (1st trade).. I've read it in bits before, but never got over my unreasonable hatred of Tim Drake to read more. THe book isn't making me like him any more, but it is a pretty good book.. I do like PAD when he's not taking himself too seriously. Some great bad puns in there.
It was a bit jarring to have the first mystery the team solved to be about the Beatles, like they lived through them (Even if you go by the post zero hour time frame, it's unlikely any of them were born before John Lennon died) but I got it, so I guess I'll give a pass for that one.

That sounds pretty cool, codystarbuck ! I've never heard of Newman, but I usually get a kick out of stories that team up characters from popular literature like that, so Newman's going on my to-read list. Thanks! Interesting... is that related to the Anno Dracula series? Seems like it could be...but doesn't really say so.

Galactus famously optic-blasted the Silver Surfer when he de-powered him. But then Galactus is a cosmic entity... he probably can shoot eardrum blasts if he has a mind to! Thanos used a wide-beam optic blast to punch a big hole in a squad of Magus's black knights, back in Warlock #10. Mimic, the super-adaptoid or any other power-copying character can obviously use optic blasts (but that's a bit of a cheat). Does the Emerald Eye count? Darkseid shoots Anti-Life out of his eyes, at least the Diniverse version does. And of course there's a plethora of Superman-analogues that do... Homelander, the one in Irredeemable, Samaritan (I think) etc

X-Men: Legends Edited by Stan Lee I mostly picked this (and a similar Spider-Man one) up for the curiosity factor, I've never been too attempts at most attempts at prose with comic book characters.. they generally just don't quite work. Once a looked at this one, and realized I didn't recognize too many of the names, I lowered my expectations even more. IT's not TERRIBLE,though. The one name that IS a big one is Brian K. Vaughan.. his story hear has to be one of his first published works (this came out a couple years before Y the last Man even)... his contribution is a pre-X-Men Angel story that isn't bad. One that that's pretty fun is there is a 'continuity guide' that places the stories in X-Men history.. I can't imagine that's even possible these days. My favorite I think was 'Steel Dogs and Englishman', which features a depowered Sean Cassidy and a pre-Excalibur Pete Wisdom vs. Sentinel Dogs created by Justin Hammer... doesn't make alot of sense, but it was pretty fun. Most of the stories feature one (or two) characters, and more the a few only sort of fit with the character (the one that was a magazine interview with Beast was particularly off). Fun diversion none the less.
