Woke up this morning craving an old childhood favorite...when I was a little kid in the New York City area, we'd get local ads for Carvel ice cream. The announcer was this gravel voiced "3 packs a day" sounding older gentleman, and when he talked about ordering a "Fudgie the Whale" ice cream cake for my next birthday, to me it was almost like an old family member reminding you to do something rather than a sales pitch. I wish I was in the area and could still order one! They sell Carvel cakes at Walmart, but just the more traditional Ice Cream cakes and none of the fancier ones like Cookie Puss. Posted this long commercial pack in the Random Videos Thread eons ago

Yeah, I tend to agree about Gruenwald's Squadron Supreme series: I think it's a really outstanding story, and mostly underrated. Personally, I still think Watchmen is better for any number of reasons, but I do like Squadron better than DKR (of which I've always had a slightly lower opinion and think is overrated given the frequency of its appearance on 'best-ever Batman stories' lists). There are, though, a number of people who share your opinion about how it stacks up against the two big, 'must-read' series of the 1980s ( here's a recentish example). And I've noticed that you can find any number of posts from the last ten or so years at least that provide thoughtful and well-reasoned comparisons (again, here's a fairly recent example from 13th Dimension blog). And the relative merits of the two tend to get debated - on and off and with greater or lesser levels of thoughtfulness and acrimony - at forums similar to this one. I think the one at Byrne Robotics from 2009 is example of the worse kind, in which the various contributors soon begin insulting various creators or each other (and then eventually stray off the main subject). I'm sure you can find more intelligent discussions at the Comics Round Table. IDK, I'm more partial to Rick Veitch's The One than I am Watchmen

A series I have reread many times over the years is The Tick Karma Tornado. It was a follow-up to the regular series right around the time they were getting started with the animated series (first published later in 1993), and Ben Edlund was still involved with the plotting. The first 2 issues are my favorite, the “Challenge of Champions” where Tick is transported off Earth to a cosmic contest of satirical proportions. He is the leader of “Team Earth” and his team is comprised of various “heroes” (of sorts) from different periods of Earth's history. Some of the members are a T-Rex, Eli Whitney, the girl who fell down the well to save her cat, Cleopatra, an actor who used to play a superhero on TV but is now a bit “unhinged”, among others. It's honestly one of the funniest things I think I've ever read. It also leads into the next storyline where Tick is cast into space and becomes the “herald”/assistant of the Nigh-Omnipotus which was also adapted into an episode of the cartoon. Highly recommended! Love the Tick (vaguely remember the cartoon, loved the Patrick Warburton live action show), have maybe a handful of issues. Really need to pick up the collected Editions that NEC put out

R. I. P. Ray Liotta unquestionably best known for playing Henry Hill in Goodfellas. 67 is becoming increasingly young to me. Also great as Shoeless Joe Jackson in Field of Dreams. Ray was also in GTA: Vice City, he really made the part of the main character Tommy Vercetti his own

On the other hand, a brand new SSD and a clean OS install can do wonders for old hardware if you're not doin any heavy lifting. Same, my old HP Compaq Presario had Vista and it just got to the point where it constantly kept crashing. I heard from someone about Linux Mint and did a boot-install of that from a spare usb flash drive. Mint is still about is user friendly as Linux gets

I don't know about the newer ones, but when I had a Macbook Pro a few years ago it was surprisingly easy to unscrew the bottom and pop in a new drive and do a clean install of OSX. Might be worth a try? I’m not tech savvy enough to attempt that. My computer is about 8 years old, too. You might just want to upgrade. 8 years is practically ancient as far as technology goes

FF #16-#21 and Annual #1
Loved the issues with Mad-Thinker, Rama-Tut, and Hate Monger. Annual was good. Felt a little bit too long in some places, but it was nice to see Namor's battle with the FF come to decent conclusion

Got this in the mail yesterday. Now I need 4 more to complete the first New Warriors 75 issue run. Really need to get the New Warriors Omnibus at some point. And here I promised myself I would never get another Omni outside of Howard or maybe Man-Thing....
Would prefer an Epic Collection installment, but I'd probably have to wait years for that to become a reality

I am more likely nowadays, when I can afford it, to buy the Judge Dredd Megazine (which began in 1990) than 2000 AD, which features Dredd among a lot of other strips. I've read early Megazine and it was pretty damn stellar. Loved Chopper: Earth Wind & Fire the most

X-Men The Hidden Years was kind of like that too Well the point of Hidden Years was to fill in a gap when the X-Men weren't having new stories published. I get that, but was it really a story worth telling though when it's entirety was surmised in Giant-Size X-Men #1?

So what about Untold Tales made you want to fight me? Clones aside, I wasn’t a fan of Untold Tales. I wasn’t a fan of the premise. Seems in comics (and this could be my perception), that ‘untold tales’ is code for ‘the best tales ever, which we’re bringing to you now’. But if the ideas for the stories were so great, why weren’t they told in the first place, rather than untold? X-Men The Hidden Years was kind of like that too

Just a thought: I preferred X-Factor over X-Men back in the day (and I’m irked that X-Factor is now associated with Simon Cowell’s shows). The mainline books really didn't do much for me and I've never cared for Claremont's style of writing. There are a good number of comics (Elementals, DP7, DNAgents, and Harbinger come to mind) out there that do the X-Men formula way better tbh

LOL. This is the official description for the show, via Channel 4: That reminds me of this really boring show that I'd watch on a channel called Dabl, waiting for a rerun of the American iteration of Kitchen Nightmares to come on
Basically three or four women who didn't know each other would attend each other's wedding and then rate them. There was also another wedding show that came on where people would talk about what went into planning their weddings and how much they would spend on them
I'm not married, never have been, and I get that a wedding is a very special occasion, but it feels like these shows are sucking the magic out of it
