IDW is putting out a hardcover, slip-cased volume of Grasscutter 1 & 2. Here's what Stan had to say about it: IDW will be printing Grasscutters 1&2 in a single oversized edition. It will not be in the Artist Edition format, but in a slipcased hardcover. As in the case of the AE, though, the art will be scanned from the black & white originals in color so you can see all the imperfections, white outs, etc. The Complete Grasscutter will run more than 460 pages, including the cover gallery, story notes, and other extras. They will all be signed. There will also be an Edition with an original drawing and one for the VIP dinner. However, the story will be the same, so don’t expect any new twists when you read it. In reply to a comment about the signing plates showing "This is # _______ of an edition of 999." I actually signed about 1200. That will accommodate the Artist Proofs, Publisher Proofs, and any damages. The plates are a little more than 9x13 inches, so it will be a fairly large volume, especially at about 460 pages. There will also be an edition of 50 with blank plates on which I will do original sketches. They go on sale at SDCC and then will be available directly from IDW Limited. The regular run of 999 will run $150. Pricing for the 50 sketch copies hasn't been determined yet, but I heard they're thinking something in the $300-500 range. Dimensions are approximately 9x13.

We've been bugging Stan for a few years to do a covers book over on the Dojo site. When Stan and his stepson Daniel saw the previews for the Hellboy covers book earlier this year, they decided that it was about time to do an Usagi covers book. So they asked Dark Horse if they were interested and obviously got a "yes."

It sold so well that it's going back to print for the first time since the Fantagraphics years (issue #1 and #10). The second printing will have an all new cover.

Mine arrived today. #81. So the big question now: All that's left of the Dark Horse content is The Hidden and the TMNT crossover. Are they going to make a Saga Edition volume 9 out of that? Maybe incorporate material from The Art of Usagi Yojimbo, the issue #100 tribute, and supplementary info? Yes, there is a Saga 9 scheduled for next year, covering the final 2 trades: 32 Mysteries and 33 The Hidden. They're also looking at what extra material they can include to fill it out.

Looks like the first 3 issues will feature the return of Sasuke the Demon Queller! Stan says that Gen will be back in issue #7. As a huge Gen fan, I'm really looking forward to it. Also, if you haven't been keeping track, issue #1 has a ton of variant/exclusive covers (I think 18 at last count). I've been keeping the Usagi Yojimbo wiki updated with all of those: usagiyojimbo.fandom.com/wiki/Usagi_Yojimbo_Vol._4_No._1

I can't wait to resume this timeline once the next Saga edition ships! Has anyone who has been reading the floppies noticed any winters over the past three years of publication? So book 30: Thieves and Spies ends with Usagi hurrying off to not be caught in a storm, with an epilogue "days later" with it raining. Book 31: The Hell Screen picks up with it Usagi in a rainstorm (I assume part of the same rainstorm the previous book leaves off on) and the rainstorm runs the first two stories. The third one begins with "Three months later..." (which is a quick job), then an Inspector Ishida team-up, and the final story of the book is the end of the rainy season, so I assume only 3 months or so have passed from the end of book 30 to the end of 31. Normally the rainy season lasts mid-June to the end of July, so this must have been a particularly rainy year (Usagi's comments lead me to believe it's rainier than normal). Book 32 starts with Usagi musing "I will reach the city soon, I should drop in on Inspector Ishida...unless he's sick of seeing me so soon after that mystery of the Hell Screen." So book 32 takes place very soon after book 31. All of book 32 and book 33 are with Inspector Ishida and take place over a relatively short amount of time. So the short answer is "no," no winters over the last three years. I'd guess 4 months or less have passed over the last 3 years.

For further clarification on what will happen with the black and white editions, Stan posted on the Dojo board:

I'll be honest -- I have not been fond of the recent official t-shirt releases. I really need a new Usagi shirt, but I haven't seen one that I want Any particular design or design style you'd like to see? I had been talking to Daniel (Stan's stepson that works on the merchandising) not too long ago about stuff we'd like to have made, so I'm happy to put a word in next time I'm chatting with him. The demon Usagi with skulls shirt was a design I pitched on the Dojo forum a while back and the final product is really close to what I had mocked up, so our requests are being heard.

Since we now know that it's about early Christianity in Japan, I can recommend watching Martin Scorsese's Silence, which deals with the same subject matter (if you have Amazon Prime, it's streaming on there).

Can't wait. Since production is starting this year, I wouldn't expect to see it debut until 2019.
