I first heard of this series back in 2000 I think when Jack Kirby Comics were re-releasing a version of it - it was in a Comicscene article and it seemed fascinating in that way that a lot of later Kirby works do - have never actually read the series though, so it will be interesting to follow along! Although I don't always agree with your interpretations, I love your Fantastic Four as Great American Novel website - it's always fascinating to see you unpack these stories.

Huh. I should read this. I (at least) like all the other S & K work from the '50s, and Boy's Ranch is flat-out one of my favorite comics. I think it's still worth a read if you enjoy the Simon and Kirby work of the 50's - it's just a lesser work, IMO

Truth be told, when I read through all the Fighting American material I found the first Rob Liefield-era mini series (and the 'Christmas' short story) to be the most entertaining of the lot, even more so than the Simon and Kirby material, which was always kind of flat. A big part of that, though, was probably because it was a look into what might have been, had Rob not left half-way through his Heroes Reborn Captain America run.

In regards to them being in Paris one minute and New York the next - could they be using the teleporter tubes to be zipping around everywhere? Or haven't they been introduced yet? (Sent on my phone so please excuse any missed errors)

While the newsprint looks a little dirty, once again to my eyes the ordinal has much more texture to it (some of which comes from the inky look) - And in all honesty, sometimes the ultra sharp line work doesn't look as good as the softer originals, imo for example in the Starfire pages the line work on the trees looks better softer in the original (sorry for any typos or bad punctuation am typing on my phone when I should be working)

See for me though, even when the colours are perfect to the original - there is still a tangible quality to the original that makes it look better. Everything is too flat looking in the digital recoloured versions, there isn't that paper grain that helps add depth and texture to the scans of the original.

On a bit of a tangent but I think I have the complete run of Jughead's Diner - I loved that era of Archie as a kid, with Jughead's Time Police and Archie's RC Racers

I went on a Fighting American binge recently and bought the Awesome versions and the original - still need to pick up the DC series from the 80's (?) - the original was an interesting series, though the satire seemed hit and miss to me - I think it would have been hilarious if the issue with the satanist demons in the mountains had been red-blooded Americans who hated Commies as well but that wasn't what happened (and probably couldn't have been a viable twist at the time it was written)

Thank you so much for the link and the chance to be a part of this new classic comics forum - I mainly lurked on the old one, but it was pretty much the only forum I ever visited on CBR so it was quite a shock to go online and discover it gone!
