Ray Palmer. For decades he always felt bland to me when not wearing his Atom outfit. And even as Atom he was mostly riding on the shoulders of other heroes. Literally!

As I knew it would, this year the couples showing up are exactly what love is all about. Crazy, wild, mind blowing and spectacularly unique. Totally unexpected combined with the usual suspects. Gonna be a wiiiiide spreadsheet tally for Kurt at the end of all the shenanigans.

It was never an issue for me as a kid. Earth 1 was modern heroes I could pick up and know/read any day from the stands. Earth 2 was all the earlier 1940/50's heroes no longer being printed. Newer vs older oversimplified

#11. Balder the brave and Karnilla the Norn Queen
Known as loving someone on the wrong side of the tracks, also in love with someone dangerous, opposites attract, not loving wisely, the heart wants what it can't have, she's a little bit naughty and he's a little bit nice, big city boy loving a little town girl and so forth and so on...
It's a trope of star crossed lovers where one is "good" and attracted to in this case the "bad" girl. Both know it is a doomed love to fail, yet both yearn strongly deep down in their hearts and souls dreaming and a wishing of what "might be" if they could only agree to disagree and turn their back upon the others shortcomings. He wants her to change her evil ways. She wants him to change his good ways. Is there no halfway meeting place for these tortured hearts?
Anytime these 2 appeared in the pages of Thor exploring the light/dark of love, it made for interesting reading. Both such headstrong, stubborn characters unable to compromise their ethics or come to a middle ground in their love, only making things all the more difficult between them. The mind, the heart, the soul, the emotions locked in eternal battle. Will they? Won't they? It was Moonlighting in comic book form before it was on television.
Awkward teen love understood this path very well and knowing adults struggled with the same issues didnt make it any easier. How do you reconcile such a love? This played out for many years with each rushing to the others side in times of need only for them to withdraw once more when the emergency is over. It was spectacular when the storm tossed lovers finally admitted to and fully embraced their feelings. What fools these Agardian Gods be in the face of love...

It amazes me how much story is devoted to the civilian identity of heroes and/or villains. We pay for the SUPER parts of their life, not the secret identity stuff. No kid cares about the boring, icky romance aspect in comparison to the fisticuffs and powers. As adults, we all know the drudgery of work as a normal human being while we yearn for having our own super powers.
Who cares a whit about any hero or villain when not wearing their costume? Phooey I say, gimme the fun and action adventures of on duty superheroing every time.

#12 Karate Kid and Princess Projectra
The reverse romantic fantasy of every girl who dreams of finding her Prince Charming. It is the everyman, dedicated Earth boy training of himself in being the best martial artist he can be, escaping his poor beginnings and finding his true love, a royal Princess from a far away world. A real partner as part of the team Legion of Super-Heroes, they find love and short lived happiness until the tragic death of Karate Kid. A love so strong, the grief and heartbreak drives the Princess to madness.
Val of earth and Jeckie of Orando in the classic futuristic version of the tragedy of doomed lovers. I was a young teen, the perfect age for enjoying the various romances found in the LSH during the Cockrum/Grell runs and their couplings all grabbed me by the hormones! Of all those imaginative and creative couples to choose from, theirs is one of the best for which I couldn't get enough of. My own heartbreak over KK's death was devastating and all the more "real" as it remains canon with Val never being brought back like that lucky punk of Lightning Lad.
So many wonderful matches of characters in the Legion to choose from so I forced myself to limiting it to just ONE couple. And the Warrior and the Princess stands out strongest in my memories...

I much prefer the "lone" hero types as guest stars in Avengers. Black Knight, Captain Mar-vell, Spidey, Daredevil, Black Widow, Falcon, Luke Cage, Iron Fist. Shang Chi, Dr. Strange, Ghost Rider, Blade and others. Anymore it feels like Marvel Heroes are automatically issued an Avengers membership with their birth certificate!

Which One of the holidays is Egg Nog for? Christmas or New Years Eve?
Growing up my parents were beer drinkers until I was around age 9 when my mother decided it was time for them to quit. I had never seen or heard of this strange beverage called the Nog of Eggs before this. But from there on, the Nog became the family traditional drink to toast on New Years Eve at midnight in exchange of alcohol.

Have to agree with @supercat as in my head or when talking about them I refer to the team as JLA. Shorthand way I grew up when referring to them, same with JSA. Just so naturally rolls off the tongue and EVERYONE knows I am referencing the League.

Hey brutalis, what's the wrap up for today Zoomfest ? A spectacular time was had by all for those of us able to attend. A great 1st meeting with the wise wizard Kurt. He is knowledgeable in far more than comics! Discussions ranged from weather survival of tornadoes, extreme heat/rattle snakes and NOT having your home blown up by your phone company hitting the gas main in the front yard. Some classic comics and movie talk AND we even managed to include Image and Colletta in our talks in honor of your absence brother George. We learned of the early life and careers of both Rob Allen and Kurt, along with Mr. Allen showing off his singing skills once more with a song recital done from memory! We now know Kurt was a Marvel artist who remains unpublished. I learned more about the Tacoma Aroma than I ever needed or will need to know. We had the fun of our tartan clad rock and roller showing off his German military cap as we travelled along learning of Smurfs, Prince Valiant and more in the world of Germanic history and it's comic books. Marty showed off his mall design prints on his wall of wonder. Hoosier visited from his parking lot command center. A certain cheese raiding rodent is proudly awaiting his comic being printed. And we can proudly boast no sandwiches were harmed during our meeting but Cranberry juice and Apple Cider turned to horrible beer versus good memories and the reminder Jack Daniel's is NOT bourbon. We all hope to enjoy another fun filled diversion with Kurt in keeping him from working on his book next Sunday. So set your alarms, send out notices and plan to join the excitement... Yes, we missed you Icc and you can host and entertain us all as usual next week!
