3. Who is that guy wearing black checking on Usagi while he's examining the corpses? Very good question!
Not the same guy, but he is dressed really similar to the mystery guy who appears in The Lord of the Owls, but who hasn't reappeared since.
I remember Stan did mention a background guy he had something planned for, but abandoned it halfway through. Don't know if it's this one, the one with the LotO, or if it's the same guy.

1. There aren't enough words to describe how much I love this story. I dare say it's Stan's best, though I know that's a bold statement to make;
2. Seriously, how can one not love Inazuma's demeanor? She's almost regal;
3. Who is that guy wearing black checking on Usagi while he's examining the corpses?

I was mulling over this story, and though of something... Usagi never showed any further angst for Mayumi's death.
Not that he should do a "Peter Parker guilt trip"™, but I don't know... Some kind of recognition of this as a failure?
Eh, I think I just like them together too much.

How did you first learn about Usagi? Chris Sims' column in the now defunct Comics Alliance website. What made you start reading? Bought Saga vol. 1. Thought "eh, might give this a chance, after all, reviewers tend to say it's good". What was your first story? "Shades of Green". Then "Jizo". Then "Usagi's Garden". Then "AutumnohmygoodnessIreallyneedtogooutandbuymoreofthisit'ssogood What makes you a Usagi fan? Hard to tell, because it's so good. Art is subtle and defined. Plots can be either straightforward or full of twists, and you'll enjoy both anyway. Characters worth investing your time in. And best of all, Stan doesn't cheat while telling a story. "Ah you thought Gen was a good guy but actually he was out to kill Usagi despite no prior indications or hints" is not something Stan would do.

Hm, saké in itself could be an interesting angle for Usagi. Some samurai had drinking problems. Or Stan could tell about the fabrication.
All I know is, Usagi tends to drinks less and less the older he gets.

Thing is, Zato-Ino is the resident Daredevil, so he has an unfair advantage.

Ah, he recognizes Inazuma as the supreme swordsperson in the Usagiverse.
That's something I wasn't too sure on, if it was her or Zato-Ino.

Tangential question-I know there are TMNT Funko Pops, is there a Usagi Funko Pop or plans for one? I'd love to have a Usagi in this format. -M Searched high and low for them but couldn't find it. I don't think there is. I'd love an Usagi, Jotaro, Tomoe, Gen, Kitsune, Inazuma, Jei and Ishida line.

I think Ishida works even better alone than with Usagi. The rabbit ronin steals the spotlight a bit too much, and Ishida does not do much detective work without his help when they're together.

Actually there's a lot he could do with Gen, even if we just stick to "Senso" and to Stan's comments.
He can make him find employment with the Geishu. He also mentioned Gen's romance with Kitsuné as something worth telling. He could do lone samurai stories that wouldn't quite fit Usagi. He could explore the apparent contradiction in Gen's past when he said he "became masterless".

Also reprinted in b/w in Usagi Yojimbo Book 26: Traitors of the Earth (2012) OP has been edited. Thanks! It's a cute 2-page gag. I notice it shares a punch line with an old Calvin and Hobbes strip. "Cut the Plum" appears at the very end of Saga 7. That entire volume (400+ pages) doesn't have a single appearance by Gen, and I think the next continuity Saga volume (not the one with Senso, but the one that would collect issues 139-160 or thereabouts) wouldn't, either. Nice catch. Yes, I noticed that. And if we're thinking of #139 up to 160, which he just finished, then yes, no Gen either.

Where was it published? Didn't see it in the sagas nor in Fantagraphics' books

It was. Read it somewhere, not sure where, but it is Stan.

It is interesting how we get hooked on stories that teach us something new.
