I read 73 books last month. That was my second most for the year. I'll be able to keep that pace this month as we have winter in reverse here in Houston and these are the months one finds themselves inside due to the oppressive, and unrelenting, heat and humidity.
The best thing I read in June BY FAR was Dreadstar. I read 9 issues, 5-13, and found it thoroughly captivating.
The worst thing I read was Nathaniel Dusk. Too much style, not enough substance. A huge disappointment since I expected great things.
Meanwhile, I continue my trudge through the second X-Men omnibus. Steranko and Adams are not far off but gee-whiz these comics are bland and the characters are poor. The worst Marvel title of the 60's?
For July I'll be hopping back on board with Savage Sword of Conan to follow along with the excellent annotation thread and I'll be reading the first 11 issues of Shade the Changing Man.

Bought the whole series a year ago and haven't touched it yet for fear that it won't hold up to the Metamorphosis Odyssey. As I understand it, the tone is very different. Me too! Already read the first one. Not bad thus far.

Not reading a substantial amount at all this summer, and yet I'm churning out a lot more reviews. I guess the more time I spend reviewing, the less time I spend reading...

The worst Marvel title of the 60's? Yeah, those X-Men are rough to slog through. Only thing I've read that gives them a run for "worst" of that era is early Incredible Hulk (#103 through #121 is all I managed to get through before throwing in the towel).

Tales to Astonish Hulk is a little worse I think. A different artist every third issue hampers the strip. (Kirby doing 'layouts' does not count!) I do think I like this era of Hulk a little more than you. At least Hulk 108-110 has the sublime Trimpe-Severin art team.

Agree that the art in some of those Hulks was very nice, particularly the Severin issues. Early Trimpe on that title is not all that great, but he obviously really improved as time went on. The writing was bad, no matter how you look at it, and the "plots" were nonsensical.

June wrap up. The Good:E-man #1 ( First Comics)This was the solo series by Joe Staton and I really enjoyed the characters and the reintro of the E-man world. Infinity Relativity HC- Jim Starlin rebounded from a really bad Hulk/Thanos Mini series to capture the cosmic imagination in this Original HC. All the familiar characters are here( Warlock, Gamora, PIP, Guardians of the Galaxy) But with a twist. I won't spoil it for anyone , but if you are a Starlin cosmic fan, you will love it. Thanos 1-6Starlin has Thanos oppose a Galactus that is being manipulated by a outside entity. What gives this series a twist is that Thanos is attempting to make restitution for his past misdeeds. Avengers Classic 1-4Half the books are reprints of the first 4 Silver age Avengers issues but the backup stories are new by Dwayne Mcduffie and they give more meat to the early team. The Hulk flirting with the Wasp? Yes it's there. The Bad:Samuree #8 In the 80's , Neal Adams had his own studio which released titles that relied heavily on his artwork and his clones. The Art was nice but , boy, could they overwrite a page. Secret Wars 2,3 ( 2015) Been there and done that. Maybe I've been reading comics too long. The Ugly:JLA 4 (1997)The Grant Morrison run of the DC super team mighty be the best run ever, but the weak link was definitely the Howard Porter artwork. It's funny, but at the time, I didn't think his artwork was this bad but maybe I was being swayed by the awesome writing. Uncanny X-men #3
The deadly combination of Claremont wordiness and Perez overrendering made my senses reel.

My favorite from June, and probably the whole year and possibly the year before that and the one before that even was Neil Gaiman and Alice Cooper's The Last Temptation.
Yeah, read the end of that sentence again, Neil Gaiman(always awesome!) and Alice Cooper...yes really, that Alice Cooper. It was a tremendous book that had a great Ray Bradbury feel.

Green Arrow and Atom taking out Darkseid will always be an all-time favorite though.

Was wondering if we could brainstorm and come up with a list of all Marvel or DC titles that spent a good part of their existence (say 6 months or more) primarily reprinting old issues of other comics....

Welcome back, Richard! I think you'll get a much better response if you start a new thread for this...seems like a good topic, actually!

Ok let me know if I'm doing this right. Since I've just started here, I don't have a post for what I've read, but will start off with my plan. I started reading comic books as a 7 year old in July of 1975 -- 40 years ago! So I've always wanted to take some time and read the Marvel Comics that I WOULD have read in 1974 if I'd started reading them a year earlier. So for the next year, I'll be reading the comics I would have been reading 41 years ago that month. This month, July, I'll be reading July 1974 (October cover date) books that include:
Fantastic Four 151 Avengers 128 Amazing Spider-man 137 Incredible Hulk 192 Captain America & the Falcon 178 Defenders 16 Invincible Iron Man 18 Captain Marvel 34 (actually a September cover, but it would have still been out in October since it was bi-monthly, and I know I'd have read it) Dr. Strange 24 Marvel Team-up 26 Ghost Rider 28 Tomb of Dracula 25
And actually I started last night by reading FF 151.

That sounds really fun if you can have the comics (or perhaps you're using Marvel Unlimited).
