Under the wire, I caught Judex (1963). This French film is a b&w talkie remaking the 1916 serial of the same name.
Judex is a bridge between Zorro and Batman. He's a masked crimefighter, detective, and master of disguise who fights evil from his cave hideout complete with futuristic scifi gadgets. I didn't notice a mask in this version, but the other elements are still intact. There are some nods to the silent era, such as title cards. The film appears to be set in the same era as the original -- even if some of the actresses' hairdos look very early 1960s. (And one of the actors kinda looks like a French Warren Beatty).
There are some neat "mod" touches to the cinematography and shot composition as well. It's a product of its home time as much as it an homage to the past.
There's a masquerade ball towards the beginning that reminded me of somethig out Eddie Campbell's Batman Elseworlds, "Order of the Beasts."
The decision to condense the entire serial's story into a 97-minute film leaves out a lot of exposition. Why does Judex do what he does? Who are his henchmen? Leaving these questions open adds to the surreal nature of the whole affair.
Directed by Georges Franju.
This film is available, subtitled, on DVD from the Criterion Collection.

Well, a few of you aren't keeping tallies, but it sure looks like our winner for the month is thwhtguardian, which should come as little surprise to anyone. Your turn to pick February's theme, good sir.

I had a lot of fun watching the super hero serials and discussing serials in general so let's make it official: February is Movie Serial month, and not just comic heroes but sci-fi, detective, westerns and everything else you can find.

Another good Serial is the Mysterious Doctor Satan:
This was originally intended to be a Superman story, but negotiations fell through so it was retooled to where the hero was called The Copperhead, a guy who wore a copper hood mask and left a small copper snake figure as his trademark. This was a good serial. The only thing I thought was very hard to believe was that the hero never really changed from his secret identity clothes. All he did was put on the Copperhead mask, so I'm really surprised none of his friends caught on to who the Copperhead was. Still the action was great in all 15 chapters.

Found the note on the DC Archives site:
"On Saturday, March 7, at 10am EST, Turner Classic Movies will present the first episode of the first Batman film serial. Then for the next 3 months, they'll show another episode in the same timeslot (15 weeks in total). At least that's what it looks like, judging from their March listings."
Not the first time they've run serials this way, either.

Then when they were sold in the 4 DVD package set, on the shrink wrap it said "As Seen On TCM". Right now I'm watching my DVD of Adventures of Captain Marvel. I'm at Chapter 6 now.

So the site plays through dailymotion, and I made it through Chapters 1-5 fine, but come Chapter 6, it started giving me ads. The ad at the beginning was fine. But it would rather awkwardly interrupt the video to play an ad instead. Going to try youtube.

I will make a note of that in my online calendar that I use to keep track of important things to watch on Television.
