Dir: Orson Welles Cast: Rita Hayworth , Orson Welles , Everett Sloane . BW-87 mins, CC, On Turner Classic Movies Part 1 of 2Some of my favorite pictures of her. As I'd mentioned in an earlier post, Rita's icy blonde, short-haired look here is similar to the look that her "replacement" at Columbia, Kim Novak, would later become famous for. Studio head Harry Cohn was angry at Rita's latest "transgression" (marrying Aly Khan and leaving Hollywood for a while) so he decided to groom the young Novak as his new studio star. If you have pics of Kim Novak from the 1950s you'll see Novak usually sports a similar short blonde hairdo. And as you'd noted earlier, MG, Rita took it all in stride and got along with Kim when they co-starred with Sinatra in Pal Joey. In the early 1960s Rita was also helpful to the lovely young Claudia Cardinale when they co-starred in Circus World with John Wayne.

Lana Turner and Rita Hayworth are both aces in my book, but they can't compete with Joan Fontaine.
Suspicion is my favorite Alfred Hitchcock movie and Rebecca is another one I like almost as much.
Lana has Imitation of Life and The Postman Always Rings Twice and The Bad and the Beautiful. Rita has Gilda and The Lady from Shanghai and Salome.
But Joan has the two Alfred Hitchcock movies and when you add in Letter from an Unknown Woman, she takes the top prize.

I do have some Kim Novak Pictures from the early 1950's. I will share some of those next week. You do know Rita Hayworth very well. Thanks, Mecha. She's one of my favorites so over the years I've read a lot about her. I love classic Hollywood cinema, so I have a lot of books on the old Hollywood actors and the Hollywood studio heads such as Harry Cohn (Columbia), Louis Mayer (MGM), Zanuck (Twentieth Century-Fox), Selznick, etc. EBay is great because now I can actually buy some old periodicals--the old fan magazines are fascinating and reveal a lot about society back then.
