Ah, darn. Kim Duchateau is not female? Luckily I still have Virginie Augustin.. and Sarah Dyer, though I'm not sure if I should put her as a writer or artist (probably as a writer, I have enough artists now).

At least two of my favorite artists working today are women -- Amanda Conner & Joelle Jones. I strongly suspect there are others; those are just off the top of my head.

LOVE her art, have several t-shirts, prints and her book...but haven't read her comic yet. She has a miniseries called Burn through Dark Horse I think it was. I think she may also have a oneshot or two out there. Maybe a second miniseries. And she does covers for other comics. Elephantmen for sure, I think there was more.

I've seen Tampopo. Yeah one of her Elephantmen covers is in a Spectrum book I have.

I always have trouble with the "writer" "artist" division in these things so I never end up voting. Most of my favorites - Lynda Barry, Kathy Malkasian, Linda Medley, Allison Bechdel, Kate Beaton, Gabrielle Bell, Chynna Clugston...) do both. This is even harder than my "everyone list" just 'cause my favorite female list runs even indier.

I did not know Jan Duursema was female (or that she was married to Tom Mandrake!) I loved her work on the Elric adaptations. I also just learned both those things.

This is even harder than my "everyone list" just 'cause my favorite female list runs even indier. I have the same difficulty. Loosely, I am placing all of my cartoonists on short lists for both, and hoping each will be edged off one but not the other. It's mostly working, except that Wendy Pini won't get off either.

Upon careful reflection I came up with a list of all the female creators I can say for sure I've read some work of:
Cartoonists: Alison Beichdel Coleen Coover Debbie Huey Lora Innes Lucy Knisley Linda Medley Marjane Satrapi Raina Telgemeyer Sara Varon ** Writers: Sibylline (Desmazières) Jo Duffy Devin Grayson Barbara Kesel Ann Nocenti Gail Simone Louise Simonson Christina Weir G. Willow Wilson ** artists: Kate Brown Stephanie Buscema Marian Churchland Becky Cloonan Amanda Conner Leila Del Duca Coleen Doran Jan Duursema Melinda Gebbie Pia Guerra Jeffrey Catherine Jones Sara Pichelli Wendy Pini Amy Reeder Marie Severin Yuko Shimizu Fiona Staples Jill Thompson
I'm sure I'm missing several from random superhero comics here or there, but I bet that's most of them. A pathetically small list, given that I'm sure I've read the work of over a thousand male creators.
It is in fact shorter than the shortlist I made myself when trying to choose my favorite writers recently.
I've also got my lists drafted. I'll wait a bit too post in case something I forgot occurs to me.

So far I have had 1 artist (Trina Robbins) and one writer (Barbara Randall Kesel that voted appear. I voted for Colleen Doran as my #1 artist, but she appeared on the writer list only so far.

I made a suggestion in the comments that next year they just do female creators.
The writer/artist division makes sense when people are mainly voting for DC/Marvel stuff. But they have historically had very few female creators and so many other companies frequently publish writer-artist combos.
I think the vote-splitting that will result will skew this list.

Kelly Thompson has written in her blog that she hopes this will inspire people to include more female creators on their main list next voting round.
But I fear that it has done the opposite for me. My favorite female artist is Marie Severin, and while I love her work, she's just not anywhere near my top 10. I fear I will continue to submit male-only top 10s for the main list. At least for now. In the years to come, I will be exposed to more cretors and more creators will have their chance to stand the test of time.
