Though I wasn't alive during its original airing, I was introduced to it from my grandmother prior to 1990 ... The Avengers.

Here's a classic TV question.
We watched a recent season finale whose cliff-hanger ending appeared to show the title character being killed. The show is returning next season, so it's unlikely the character is dead. But I started wondering if there are examples of shows continuing under the same title following the exit of the title character (either because of an actor's exit or real-life death). The only one I could think of was Chico and the Man, which continued for a season and a half following the death of star Freddie Prinze, who was replaced by a 12 year-old Hispanic boy.
Are there other examples?

For most of the fifth season of Dukes of Hazzard, Vance & Coy Duke were the leads while Bo & Luke Duke sat out in a contract dispute.
Shirley only filmed the first two episodes of Laverne & Shirley's final season before she walked off in a contract dispute.

Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.

Three Stooges doesn't really count since they were really theatrical shorts that accidentally got turned into a TV show.

Speaking of British imports, guv'nor: Fawlty Towers, of course. And I HATED Three's company, but I loved the British series it was stolen from, Man About The House. One series I wish they'd get around to releasing on DVD is Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em.

We have a large and faithful fans here.

Star Trek Star Trek: The Next Generation Cheers I Love Lucy Batman Bonanza Gunsmoke Night Court Buck Rogers The A-Team The Dukes of Hazard Tales of the Gold Monkey (all too short lived)
(I would have included the Simpson's, but their first episode debuted Dec 1989. That's cutting it a bit too close, even though technically they should make the cut. The Simpson's were the 90's. From 1991 thru 1999, the best written show EVER.)
