I haven't watched it past the second episode of the second series. I did see Kochanski once, but she was a hologram.
I hear that they do some weird alternate reality/time travel episodes later on in the show, but I haven't looked into it too closely. I want to be surprised.
Maybe they come across some other people later.
Alas, my attempt at levity has fallen flat... Oh, sorry!
I watched the first episode six months ago and didn't get back to Red Dwarf until last weekend.
I had completely forgotten about that!
Yes. Everybody's dead!
They're all dead!

I don't watch much TV. I grew up as a latch key kid who spent all my time watching lousy broadcast TV reruns, so I've spent little time in front of the boob tube as an adult. I think there are only three shows pre-1990 that I ever got seriously invested in:
- Dark Shadows (long after it went off the air via the DVD sets) - Robotech (long after it went off the air via the DVD sets) - Star Trek TNG (right there when it happened. The only GOOD TV I watched as an adolescent. Captain Picard practically raised me. Of course even this barely counts as only the first two and a half seasons were Pre-1990)

I've been watching the 1st season of the original Mission Impossible (1966) TV show. I didn't recall that Peter Graves (Mr. Phelps) was not part of the cast but rather the leader was Steven Hill (Mr. Briggs) He left after the first season after some disputes about the role and the mandatory work he had to do on the Sabbath. Steven Hill was an orthodox Jew. He left the acting profession shortly after but returned and is now known for appearing on Law and Order for 11 years as a D.A.
Also interesting to note that Martin Landau got credit as a special guest star on every show that first year. He hardly missed an episode but was not listed as a regular cast member. Many shows also had one or two of the 5 permanent team players missing.
Peter Lupus, the muscular guy had an interesting career. He first got notice by being cast in numerous sword & sandal films in the early 60s , playing Hercules and other types. After M.I. he hooked up with the U.S. army and starred in many of their promotional films. With the permission of DC Comics, he played Superman in some of these short promotional films. Then he posed nude in Playgirl magazine and that was the end of his Army and Superman roles.

In alphabetical order: - Mystery Science Theater 3000
- The Twilight Zone (original series)
I've also enjoyed Star Trek TOS and Garfield and Friends, and the '60s Spider-Man cartoon is so bad it's good. Overall, though, most pre-'90s television is too episodic for my liking.

Star Trek the original series is my favorite TV series of all time. Beyond that, here are some random favorite pre 1990-TV shows:
Alfred Hitchcock Presents The Twilight Zone Bonanza The Andy Griffith Show Batman (1966) The Wild, Wild West The Rockford Files Battlestar Galactica Wonder Woman Family Ties The Cosby Show Cheers Newhart McGyver The A-Team Fawlty Towers Dave Allen at Large The Wonder Years (though it ran 3 of its 5 years in the 90's)
I didn't include cartoons in my list. That's a whole other topic. (I also didn't include The Simpsons since it debuted in December of 1990 and I really think of it as a post 1990 show.)

Here's a classic TV question.
We watched a recent season finale whose cliff-hanger ending appeared to show the title character being killed. The show is returning next season, so it's unlikely the character is dead. But I started wondering if there are examples of shows continuing under the same title following the exit of the title character (either because of an actor's exit or real-life death). The only one I could think of was Chico and the Man, which continued for a season and a half following the death of star Freddie Prinze, who was replaced by a 12 year-old Hispanic boy.
Are there other examples? Valerie Harper was fired from the TV show Valerie over a salary dispute and was replaced by Sandy Duncan, who played her sister, though the show was renamed Valerie's Family then later The Hogan Family.

I'm watching the first episode of Battlestar Galactica (1978). The aesthetic is very reminiscent of Star Wars and Starbuck is very much modeled after Han Solo. Yeah, the special effects supervisor (though I may be getting his title wrong) from Star Wars also did Battlestar Galactica, so it's no accident that there's a similarity. And George Lucas was not happy!

Magnum PI Wonder Woman Dallas Knots Landing Dynasty Three's Company Laverne and Shirley Golden Girl The Jeffersons Good Times Dark Shadows As the World Turns Guiding Light One Life to Live The Price is Right The Beverly Hillbillies The Patty Duke Show Dobie Gillis Knight Rider The Carol Burnett Show Buck Rogers
We first got cable in 1984 or so and that opened up a whole new TV world. I could watch shows my parents had enjoyed when they were younger. We watched lots of tv, haha!

I was wanting to read a book about behind the scenes of Hill Street Blues, and as far as I can see, such an animal does not exist despite the length and pedigree of the show.
Does anyone know of anywhere or anything they can point me towards to scratch said itch ?

I remember they were on back to back Saturday nights (around the mid-80's) on our local PBS station, followed by Doctor Who! Tom Baker!

Fawlty Towers is a good show too; but I would had a hard time putting it in my top 20; it would made my top 30 if I really want to expand my list. Expanding to 30 ... would be a difficult thing to do here. I had a hard time enjoying Doctor Who and did not watch much of it; because there were better shows on the same time. I had one brother that loves Doctor Who and he craves it and still watches reruns in Houston.
