I used to watch Godzilla movies on TV on Saturday afternoons in the 80's and enjoyed them, but sadly I haven't seen a Godzilla movie in decades. I have been watching the Godzilla 80's cartoon, though. It's too bad that the cartoon censors of the time were so strict, not allowing Godzilla to do many of the things he's famous for, but I still think it's a decent cartoon.

GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS
This film started out fairly slow and pretty set in stage in intense and slow dialogue and you really have to pay real attention to it. Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah all had equal billing and the script is quite extensive and easy to follow and being hard of hearing ... I had no troubles following it. The actors in this movie were hitting the script quite good and they were all trying to figure out how to stop the quartet of Kaijus and did it with style and sacrifice.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that the action is quite explosive and Boston was the center of the whole thing and the introductions of the four Kaijus were astounding and they gave all four them with grandeur and the special effects were quite good and the photography is much better this time around and they learned their mistakes before.
Everything about it from start to finish is done just right and I think they could had cut about 5-10 minutes of it to make it even better. I just find the first 10-15 minutes could had reduced down to 6-10 minutes and that's should do the trick. I don't mind seeing it again because it has so much to see and to explore.
For what I just saw; this film is noteworthy, entertaining, nice script, easy to follow, and all the main kaijus were worthy seeing and it has glimpses of other kaijus like Kong and the others and I don't want to spoil the fun and they use the codenames from TOHO studios and TOHO studios influences were felt into this movie quite good and done just right.
I really enjoyed this film and I give this film a strong B+ and they did with class and dignity. I would stay for the closing credits it was very entertaining as well.
Prior to this film ... I saw the sneak preview of the JOKER and I just don't care for it.

yeah, it needed another pass for script polish, and both minor issues I had with it (the length, and some character motivation being unclear/not making sense) would have been solved by trimming some of the Mother/Daughter/Father stuff. but the acting is really good across the board, the tie-ins to prior films in the 80's and 70's series were a pleasant surprise (even if a little disappointed some of the classic Kaiju didn't appear, but I did like the updated-take on some of them that DID appear), and the special effects/CGI is amazing. seriously, the final battle in Boston was gorgeous to watch. I recommend it and would give it a strong B. . so we're almost in agreement.
oh, and there IS a stinger after the final credits. . . not a big revelation or anything, but I thought was worth sticking around for.

I really liked it. It was gorgeous. The monsters looked amazing. The music hit all the right nostalgic notes. The action was good. Even the characters were fine because these actors are good enough to deliver this dialogue.
I'm still scratching my head about the submarine scene. They introduce THAT and then do nothing with it, they don't even name it? Come on. What's the point then?

You are so right about the Submarine Scene and I felt that scene should be edited out and I was puzzling and wondering about the name of that craft. Because of that goof ... I'm downgrading my grade of a strong B+ to a C+ effective immediately.

In many ways this felt to me like a Hollywood version of GMK, the middle Millennium series movie that took a more mystical approach.

Now this was a GODZILLA movie. Not at all like that slow, plodding, mess from 5 years ago. This has some heart and soul and love and genuinely thoughtful and creative script. Plus a bunch of giant monsters going at it. What not to love? Thought all 4 of the major monsters were given great moments and some splendid designs. Rodan for me was a personal highlight. I think my only complaint might be that the fights all felt too quick and ended far too soon? Would have liked more protracted fighting and would have been more interesting if Zilla had to "fight" his way through the other monsters in getting to Ghidorah. But overall the staging and CGI were all incredible. And for this one, I did NOT mind all of the human story as they all had a more "organic" feeling for them being a part of the movie (helps that they were all great actors) and the action.
LOVED all the "Easter eggs" given to the Toho era of films, from little nods (Ghidorah is named Monster Zero for example) to including the various musical "themes" and also acknowledgements of Kong and Zilla sharing the same world. A really great movie/credits/title at the end and a fun "teaser/setup?" after the credits. For certain there is lots more to watch and take note of in preparing for the biggest throw down on the planet which is coming. A must see on the big screen just for the size and scope of it all...

Some further thoughts.
Ghidorah really was perfect. There was such a sense of dread in the buildup to his awakening and then the payoff worked. His design was frightening and the animation was stellar, especially with how the heads really had different personalities. And I appreciated how he was shown to have the advantage against Godzilla on land but was completely outmatched at sea.
I didn't mind the dark fights. The monsters were so large and there were so many lights that I could always tell what was going on. Plus with Ghidorah creating a category 6 hurricane everywhere he went there was a plot reason for it. The big Rodan action scene was in the day and looked great.
Godzilla himself I thought looked better in 2014, actually, which speaks to Edwards' cinematography. There are still plenty of absolutely gorgeous shots with him, but every shot with him in 2014 was a work of art. The music made up the difference. Those updates to the classic Toho themes were great.
In terms of the dialogue, the constant use of 'Jesus' got annoying, and the talk of Godzilla getting roided was cringeworthy, but otherwise I thought the actors pulled off their dialogue just fine.
I do not understand how anyone can complain about the cuts to the humans during the fights. The fights showed plenty of monster action and plenty of sequences where there were no cuts to the humans for pretty long periods. And when those cuts did happen the humans were usually being directly threatened by the monster fight, so it wasn't just a group of people giving commentary from the sidelines like in many Toho films. In general I prefer when the human characters are in the action than watching from a nearby hilltop or on a large screen as is usually the case in most movies.
Ecoterrorist is kind of a cliche'd plot, but the Orca was actually a clever macguffin, and their role faded away once Ghidorah made his claim to kingship. They were pretty much there just to get the plot going. I completely believe that the US government would be obsessed with killing Godzilla. I don't think the plot was any more ridiculous than most previous movies, and cirtainly less so than groups like the Red Bamboo, the Kilaks and most other alien species, Bio-Major, or Saradeia, and the latter 2 come from one of my favorite movies in the franchise. Now I want to see Tywin Lannister play Ra's Al Ghul in the DCEU, since that's who he pretty much was here.

I want it badly, but since have all on a bootleg (bought years ago at a con) . . can't really justify the cost just for the extras maybe someday as a gift.

Just watched that GKOTM trailer again. The monster bits look great (as they did in the last one) but the human dialogue...GROAN. But will probably blind buy anyway (there's a really nice steelbook coming for it.)
