Billy Ripken floated this trade idea tonight, and I'm wondering what others think.
Rays get: Shelby Miller Oscar Tavares Carlos Martinez
Cardinals get: David Price Ben Zobrist
Initially I thought the Cardinals were given up too much, but the more I think about it I think they have to make that deal. The only real hang-up I have is Tavares. He was so hyped, but in the little time he's had to play he hasn't really wowed me. I wonder if I'm expecting too much too soon. Polanco and Hamilton both have better numbers, but they're also everyday players.
I'm crazy right? I mean Waino/Price/Wacha/Lynn/Garcia seems like a fantastic rotation and the bullpen could certainly use Kelly.
Plus the last time the Cardinals made a significant trade it ended up netting them a World Series, so I guess I need to have faith.

As per MRP, Brian Cashman is getting that 3 year contract ready It was the New York beat writer for ESPN who brought up signing Headley before the season ends at a better salary than in the offseason based on a conversation he has with someone in the Yanks front office, as they see Headley's ability to play OF and possibly switch to 1B to be assets to give the Yanks flexibility to keep him in the line up when other players get healthy and when building the roster/line up for next season sinc ethey have so many aging players, so I didn't pluck it out of thin air to criticize the Yanks. I don't need to make things up to find stuff about the Yanks to criticize in terms of their signings and reliance on over-the-hill veterans on the decline, they provide plenty of fodder there on their own. -M

MLB.com has a great 14 minute video of the Yankee Stadium grounds crew struggling to put the tarp on the field during tonights torrential downpour. Its more exciting than many games I've seen this year.Too bad I can't imbed the video

Plus the last time the Cardinals made a significant trade it ended up netting them a World Series, so I guess I need to have faith. Cards would have to, IMO, throw something else in there. The three players you mentioned would get you Price, but including Zobrist would require something more. Nothing spectacular, but I'd figure a position player of some type (Matt Adams, maybe?).
That said, without Molina for the rest of the regular season presumably, do you really want to be giving up those three players, all of whom could be major components of future successful seasons, when your team is missing its best position player, thus weakening its chances at the postseason this year? Granted, they would have Price next year, but Holliday is getting older, John Jay is "meh", and Allen Craig isn't really an OF, so without Tavares to replace one of them, they're now out looking for another OF at some point. Wainwright is no kid either, and there is no guarantee they would be able to sign Price to an extension even if they traded for him.

Mozeliak isn't going to trade without Price signing an extension, and I doubt he'd include their best hitter for the ability to improve their bench with Zobrist. He might put Wong in there, but even that feels unnecessary. Three guys that can play major roles in future success is more than enough given the situation.
I'd love to put Holiday in there instead of Tavares, but Tampa's not gonna want that salary and I doubt St Louis pays it without having a prospect in the wings besides Tavares.
It doesn't matter, though. Price feels like too big a deal for the Cardinals. Despite not wanting to give a prospect for him, I think Peavy is the more likely move (if they even make one). It'd be a huge let down after talks of Price, but it would feel much more like a Cardinals move.
By the way, I think Jay is better than most people give him credit for. As soon as Yadi went down (and i quit crying and puking all over the place) I wanted them to move Holiday and Craig, call up yheir best couple non-pitching prospects and run with a Jay/Bourjis/Tavares outfield. This season is pretty much toast without the Brewers collapsing, so I say give the young guys some run.
All that being said, Mozeliak got ripped for the Rasmus trade (which I loved just because I hate Rasmus) and that netted a World Series win (in which all the players from the trade played a role), so I'll trust him for now.

NFL training camps have started. I have told my wife that I am going to disappear and that she will not see me until mid February. I know right? Can't wait! Tonight I finally have the wife and kids out of the house, and was hoping to have a beer and watch the Giants vs. Dodgers game. I live in between SF and LA, you would figure a guy with basic cable should be able to watch it...but no, it's not on. Thank god for internet feeds though. May the beer-drinking commence!

Any thoughts on the Ray rice 2 game suspension for knocking his wife cold? I think it's absolutely ridiculous. Seeing all the Ravens players on ESPN today talking about what a great guy Ray Rice is made me mental. The NFL needs to do way better than this. Plus, that guy on the Panthers who was convicted of domestic abuse - by a jury! in court! - hasn't gotten any susension at all because he's appealing it and the NFL is citing "due process" before they give any kind of suspension, even though his appeal likely won't be heard until the season is completely over. It's damn shameful by the NFL. They haven't needed any bogus "due process" to suspend people for all sorts of much more minor nonsense in the past.

Thank God for technology improving and helping out the sports junkie crowd. I remember a couple of years back being in Macau with my wife and not worrying about missing the 49ers/Giants game because of "certain ways" to utilize the internet. Watched it live at like 4 in the morning on the other side of the globe.

Does anyone know if there is a sports memorabilia website where you can document your own collection similar to comcbookdb.com? A quick google search revealed a number of such databases for sale (mostly for sports cards), but I don't know of any such free database sites. -M

I do my best not to get anywhere near the festering cesspool that is the NFL, of course, but IIRC wasn't Ray Lewis a Raven? The man was involved in murder, & everyone on the team & pretty much in the media as well pretended he was the second coming of Jesus. Compared to that, the shameful business regarding Rice is barely a blip on the radar. Presumably, everyone associated with the team is so callous toward depravity that nothing short of a Jeffrey Dahmer-type scenario would faze them, & even then they'd come up with the requisite excuses for their beloved perp. If Aaron Hernandez had played for Baltimore, presumably he'd have been elected captain of the team if not mayor of the city by now.
