Just checked out the first issue based upon recommendations here. It thoroughly blew me away. The scope, back-story, scale, pacing, and artwork all exceeded my wildest expectations. Rarely am I sold on a comic based solely upon the first issue, but WOW.  |

I'm pulling this series as well. Great book, beautifully illustrated, couldn't ask for much more in a first issue. Looking forward to reading more.

I picked it up based on Nguyen's artwork and I think I recommended it in the New Comics thread. Promising start to a new series.

One young robot's struggle to stay alive in a universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every planet. A rip-roaring and heart-felt cosmic odyssey that pits humanity against machine, and world against world, to create a sprawling space opera from the creators of Trillium, Sweet Tooth, and Little Gotham. This sounds so good and of course the team of Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen is A-list. Sony immediately picked up the film rights to this even before the first issue was for sale. Described by the publisher as “a rip-roaring and heart-felt cosmic odyssey that pits humanity against machine, and world against world,” Descender follows TIM-21, a young robot boy adrift in a galaxy that wants him dead for alleged crimes against humanity. To wit, planet-sized robots called Harvesters obliterated whole worlds without warning and without explanation, before disappearing completely. Naturally, mankind decided to wipe out all robot life, and has sent agents out into space to track down and destroy any survivors. Known for his work as a cartoonist as well, Lemire’s Trillium and Sweet Tooth are set against similarly dramatic science fiction environments and circumstances, but like those comics, Descender is told mainly from the point of view of its persecuted protagonist (and his pet-like robotic companions). The at once massive and intimate premise is perfect for Nguyen, who’s something of a master at depicting children (or at least childlike) characters, and the space opera setting gives him a chance to apply his moody visuals to places and objects you won’t find in Gotham City. As demonstrated by these early preview pages from Descender #1, the results are as good as you would expect.      |

I'm really glad Sony has already optioned the film rights. The work so easily lends itself to film.

I knew this would be right up your alley Shax, and I'm so glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. While many of the elements are familiar tropes of the sci-fi genre(mysterious monolithic structures bringing great change, robot civilizations turning anti-robot after a cataclysm and a youthful and sympathetic android) the way they are combined creates a wonderfully layered world that just grabs you right out of the gate.

I knew this would be right up your alley Shax, and I'm so glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. While many of the elements are familiar tropes of the sci-fi genre(mysterious monolithic structures bringing great change, robot civilizations turning anti-robot after a cataclysm and a youthful and sympathetic android) the way they are combined creates a wonderfully layered world that just grabs you right out of the gate. I think that's truly my favorite elements of storytelling, the ability to take familiar elements to create something new and exciting. |

Dustin Nguyen is a really good artist and rare in that he has developed different styles. This new watercolor work is much different from say his work with Paul Dini on Detective and much different than the Lil' Gotham stuff he also did for DC.
I liked the first issue and have added it on my pull list. It will be interesting to see how it develops. I'm really digging the fact that there is so many different new titles coming out from Image and others.
I've not checked out any of Jeff Lemire's other comics, but have heard good things about them over the past few years.
It is kind of surprising that Descender already been optioned considering it has only one issue on the shelf. I think the big thing that is really hurting DC and Marvel's quality is that bunches of creators are starting to save their good stuff for their indie series hoping to catch that golden ring and get into some of that Hollywood money. Stories of guys getting some Hollywood cash as the first issue hits the stands is only going to grease the wheels for others to go this direction.

I think another part of the equation is that creators these days understand that folks are not as likely to get worked up about a random series from an unknown creator versus a series from a known creator that is able to generate a lot of pre-release buzz. It behooves a creator who wants to put out their own material to spend a few years at the Big Two putting out quality work and building an audience so that, if and when the time comes for them to put out creator-owned material, they have a built-in fanbase ready for them. Creators like Ed Brubaker, Scott Snyder, and Charles Soule have put out creator-owned material in the past, but a lot more people are paying attention to them now that they have established themselves with popular runs at the Big Two. |

Make some blockbusters to keep the brand / name known and out there and the money flowing, and later do the indie film you really want to do.

Man, I could read a whole comic based on Tim just trying to fit in with his family, I really hope we see more flashbacks in the future.
