Well, just for a bit of balance, I'm loving Hickman's Avengers. Not finding it difficult to follow at all. I think some people see him as a Grant Morrison type and try to read too much into what he's writing, then assume they don't know what's going on when they don't find anything deeper in the plots. It's just popcorn comics really, just sit back and enjoy.

I will try Hickman's Avengers eventually because, even though I dislike the characterisations of some of the established characters I've seen in previews, there are other things I did like - some of the dialogue, for example, and some of the new characters he created himself.
But I want to read at least one of his solo series first because I know that if I end up feeling annoyed by his Marvel stuff I'll have a hard time giving his solo work a fair shake.

I didn't find any enjoyment in it.

And, imo, he writes a HORRIBLE Namor.
Just that entire thing is UGLY.

Thing is, though, unlike other writers that shall not be named, Hickman manages the occasional enjoyable issue. That small-scale story with Thor and Hyperion gay-parenting a bunch of Zebra-striped kids in the Savage Land was very touching. And funny. And relatable. So almost the opposite of the majority of his Avengers run. Yeah, I'll give you that one... that wasn't a bad issue. But the crap FAR outweighs it. @ CW: I did used to troll the Hickman love threads over on CBR, but even his fans seem to be getting tired of him.

I actually think just the opposite.. there's no substance at all to his stuff.. it's complete fluff... all he does is destroy stuff... then have some Deus Ex Machina event fix it. I feel like I'm reading something a 4 year old boy wrote.

And people actually LOVE this stuff. It's, like, continuing to encourage Marvel and DC to be stupid. "Go ahead, keep on being stupid. WE LOVE IT." Hickman pretty much lost me with the most recent issue of New Avengers: I guess I could figure out what was going on there, if I went back to reading every book Hickman wrote for Marvel, ever. And took notes. And drew up some charts. Jonathan Hickman is turning into the Edgar Rice Burroughs of our times: Getting lost in his own universe of ideas, throwing a multitude of races, creatures and concepts at us while lacking the stylistic clarity to keep the average reader from getting lost. I'm loving Hickmans crazy cosmic Avengers fun...

(Funny though how the thing that started off this whole anti-Hickman discussion wasn't written by Hickman)

I haven't read any Hickman, I believe... and certainly neither on FF or Avengers. But the concepts I see in the Preview pages at CBR, with what looks like a new mythology of Alephs and Engineers or whatever, are a very welcome departure from the endless recycling and misuse of Early Marvel creators' concepts. Galactus as a being on par with Death itself and Eternity? The Living Tribunal and Celestials belonging to the same select club as Life and Hate and Chaos? It all reeks of obsessive cataloging. I'd rather have our heroes face something brand new.
Familiarity breeds contempt; it's the unknown that's scary!
(Now if that's enough to make a story enjoyable, I have no idea!)

Anyway, comics for this week: IMAGE COMICS JAN150567 DESCENDER #1 CVR A NGUYEN (MR) > looks pretty good from what I've seen. Giving it a shot. JUL140569 RAT QUEENS #9 (MR) MARVEL COMICS DEC140957 AVENGERS TP VOL 05 ADAPT OR DIE JAN150856 MIRACLEMAN #16 (MR) JAN150727 PRINCESS LEIA #1 > maybe, I've been in a Star Wars mood lately. JAN150798 ROCKET RACCOON #9 On the European side: Will I finally get my Lanfeust Oddysey part 6? Anything else new coming out? Sadly we lack a single distributor like Diamond so I don't have a nice list of new stuff coming out. Browsing a bit and Gung-Ho looks nice: A german commic book (who are relatively rare compared to the massive Belgian/French output. At least to get translated into other languages. I can only think of Walther Moers, though Pip probably can name many more.)
