The only editor in comics I like is Gary Groth He's more of a publisher though, isn't he? He has a hands off approach for sure. Do it at your own pace, we'll publish it when it's ready. He also tells people off in the letters column when they complain about schedules, and says a good comic is more important than a frequent comic.

Just read issues 2 and 3 of the new Flash Gordon series from Dynamite, written by Jeff Parker. Really enjoying it so far. It spins out of the Kings Watch series, and it differs from traditional Flash Gordon in a lot of details, but Parker does an amazing job of capturing the feel and dynamic of classic Flash while still doing a different take. The art by Evan Shaner is solid It's fun and I like the different take. the colors by Jordie Bellaire are amazing. Bellaire's work has shined on a lot of books the past couple of years...Half Past Danger, Moon Knight, Nowhere Men, Pretty Deadly, the Rocketeer/Spirit Pulp Friction, etc. Prolific and good. She's definitely one of the best in the industry right now. Really enjoyed her work on Moon Knight and Pretty Deadly.

I've read a few Archie comics at my cousin's decades ago, but that's it.
Over the last few years I really like some of the moves they've made, like this, Afterlife with Archie, etc.

Everyone Alex Ross paints looks like a super villain. A combination of their facial expression and basic bone structure, and his cold unnatural palette. I think the only Ross painting I ever thought was good was the Green Goblin one,

I think the only Ross painting I ever thought was good was the Green Goblin one, I did think his Captain America looked more like Stone Cold Steve Austin from Monday Night RAW at the time...

Chaykin left the big 2 to do American Flagg, not because he couldn't get the freedom to do it there, but because he got a better financial deal elsewhere. This is actually a little quibble for a post that had a lot in it, but Chaykin had essentially been out of the industry for a few years doing book cover illustration when he came back with American Flagg!. After Star Wars, he was burnt out, and he felt he could do better, both in terms of his own art and the material he was hired to illustrate. (Not to mention the money, which was far greater for less work.) He produced a few adaptations and an original story with Moorcock, but was essentially out of the industry. He only came back because Rik Levin, Rick Oliver, and Mike Gold told him he could do anything he wanted and that he would retain the rights. If he didn't trust those guys, he may not have come back at all, although I suspect Archie would have eventually tried to get him to do something through Epic.

The Hughes cover is alright. Not the best AH! cover and not the best Archie cover of the lot. I think the Ramon Perez, Cliff Chaing and the Mike Allred covers are the best of them.

And you would be surprised how many writers who may be good technically (story structure, grammar, good ear for dialogue, etc.) have zero originality or ability to come up with plots and ideas that are not hackeneyed or cliched, and how many people who have ideas lack the technical skills and basic grasp of story structure to turn the idea into a story or to write a coherent comprehensible sentence. When I was starting out writing inthe rgp field, I had an editor take me aside on the con floor and tell me basically ideas are worthless. The have no value. Look at this floor. Just about everyone one of them is full of ideas for stories and games. So much so, they are willing to give them away for free if you give them 2 minutes to listen to them. It's all worthless. I can't sell ideas. I sell finished products so I need writers who can produce competent manuscripts who can execute ideas, whether their own or someone else's. Without that manuscript, we have no story, no product and no revenue. Don't come to me with ideas, come to me with manuscripts. A lot of people have ideas and want to have written, very few have what it takes to write or are willing to put the time and effort in to write and write well. Ideas are easy. Writing is hard. You need to decide if you want to be a writer or just another dude with ideas wandering around a con floor..then I showed him the textbook on writing or incoming college freshman I had done and a copy of the 75K word manuscript I had done for another publisher and he gave me an assignment.... -M Well put. How many athletes get by on their talent or sheer athleticism, but don't put in the day-in/day-out practice to really shine? Or vice versa -- how many with lesser talents are able to succeed because they are persistent and put in the hard work or get the right training? What you just wrote there could also be generalized to apply more broadly to any field where the right balance of talent vs. training/nurture/practice is necessary to produce good results -- art, music, sports, writing.
