yeah thats a fair point - there is a definite split between readers who follow creators and readers who follow characters and for a good proportion of readers its the editors job to make sure characters behave in "character" and preserve the "legacy" of the character. I do get the impression though these days that its more a 50-50 split between those two groups. FF basically lost half of its readership after hickman left, action lost a a huge chunk after morrison left etc. Personally i'll read any old character if the team is to my taste but yeah... thats not quite how comics work and it's impossible to argue that people do just love editorial driven events. thats why i'm enjoying the little of marvel now i've read tho - it seems they've let writers and artists off the leash for "small" books and "big" books have all the editorial fireworks - so there is something for everyone. (i knew my baseball analogy would be terrible!) It's pretty much the only reason why a book like Guardians of the Galaxy, which was struggling in its previous incarnation is suddenly a topseller. Creative team does seem to matter as well. (Not saying that the previous versions of the Guardians was bad, it's one of my favourite recent comics. Just looking at the numbers.)

Finally got around to reading Outcast by Kirkman & Azaceta (it's official title since Outcast by itself was already trademarked by another publisher) #1. I liked it. It had a certain creepiness factor and the art was very moody. I am not a big fan of Kirkman really-didn't like any of his Marvel stuff and read the first Walking Dead Omnibus and thought it was mostly meh (a large part of that is my burnout on the zombie genre as a whole after spending 9 months of 2006 designing a d20 Night of the Living Dead game for a start up publisher that went under when the art director ran off with the $10K art budget...luckily I had gotten paid for the writing already, but it never got to print, but during those 9 months I must have watched the film 100 times on DVD as I strove to match game mechanics to the feel of the movie, and I have had zero enthusiasm for the zombie genre afterwards).
I like the concept and plot of this book, and the character dynamics, but Kirkman's dialogue has all the same weaknesses-an over-reliance on cursing for effect and to hide the fact that all his characters have the same exact speech pattern, but throw in a fair number of f bombs and no one will notice, and it all just gets tiresome after a while. So we'll see if concept plot and characters can overcome my aversion for Kirkman dialogue in the long run and keep me reading.

Archie looks creepy, while Betty and Veronica look insane. Oddly, Jughead look cool. It's almost as if Archie is going to disembowel you just after Jughead shot you down while Betty & Veronica are channel Ruth Ann Moorehouse and Lynette 'Squeeky' Fromme. Probably the worst Alex Ross cover to date.

So, I took a shot on Avengers World (1st trade). It starts with Cap and Maria Hill deciding to have the Avengers and SHIELD work together again, leading to 3 different missions, one on AIM Island (which is apparently suddently super high tech), one in Madripoor (which completely ignores the current X-Men plot where Mystique bought it), and one in Italy. Three different teams are dispatched... all three lose. To be continued. Yup. 5 issues, we get the story moving 'several hours' (per the story).. took about 25 minutes to read. As a bonus, we get Sunspot and Cannonball infiltrating AIM Island (from the Now .1 issue), which was the best part of the volume for sure, but also didn't end.
Anyone know if any of the hanging threads actually finish? For 5 issues, I expect at least a little story. On the plus side, it actually FEELS like the Avengers, even with the spotlight on characters I don't care about in several cases.. this would have been a really good bronze age issue. As 5 issues, it was pretty disappointing.

Read Savage Hulk #1, it's kind of a hybrid new/classic comic. Alan Davis does a continuity implant story that takes place just after the events of X-Men #66 featuring the aftermath f the X-Men and Hulk's meeting in that issue, with the X-Men of that era as guest stars. It's Alan Davis inked by Mark Farmer, so it looks amazing, and it reads like a classic comic too. Very enjoyable. When the title was announced, I was more excited for the second arc, which will be by Jim Starlin, but Alan Davis cutting loose is always a good thing too.

New Avengers Annual #1 a Doctor Strange solo story by Frank Barbiere & Marco Rudy... some samples of Marco Rudy's art.. and... It's not often that a new comic blows me away...this one did. This is very much the modern Dr. Strange after everything Bendis & Hickman have put him through, but it's a story that can sit alongside the Englehart Brunner classics of a Doc exploring strange worlds and doing what is necessary to protect the earth as its Sorcerer Supreme. I've really enjoyed Barbiere's work on Five Ghosts form Image and Rudy's artwork is a revelation, so very trippy and perfect for a Doc story. From the rumors I've heard this isn't the regular team on the upcoming Doc solo book, but I wish it was. Great stuff. It will go up on my Doc shelf alongside my other favorite Doc tales. -M

Maybe I'll grab it next week if it's still on the shelves.

Per mrp's recommendation, I bought and read this myself today. It's straight up a Dr. Strange solo story. Doesn't tie in to anything. I can't think of any reason to have an Avengers logo on this book other than to get extra sales, as it really should just be a Dr. Strange one-shot. But, whatever. Marvel would slap an Avengers logo on my sack if they thought it would increase sales.
The comic itself was good. The art was excellent and the story was solid. As someone who has not read anything from Marvel in a few years (other than Hawkeye and the new Ms. Marvel series), and therefore has no idea what is happening with the character, I thought the portrayal of Dr. Strange was very clearly inspired by the Peter B. Gillis Strange Tales run. Which is fine, as that's one of my favorite Dr. Strange stories ever. It just meant that this take on Dr. Strange did not seem quite so revolutionary as maybe it's supposed to feel for readers.
Good issue, though.
