I've been wanting to start a general Batman thread since CCF started, but I couldn't think of a good thread title That's okay, we can wait until you do... Maybe I should have gone with "Bat to the Bone."

The death of Jason Todd was before my time but I know the tale. My question is about the rumour that some guy in California rigged up a system to continually call in and vote for his death, ultimately being the reason Robin was killed. I believe this was revealed in an interview but is it true? Has anyone ever come forth?

The death of Jason Todd was before my time but I know the tale. My question is about the rumour that some guy in California rigged up a system to continually call in and vote for his death, ultimately being the reason Robin was killed. I believe this was revealed in an interview but is it true? Has anyone ever come forth? I vaguely remember an article about this rumor, and I think it was a pretty detailed articled about the available technology at the time. The conclusion was that it was possible that some crazed fan had gotten ahold of equipment that could rig the vote with robo-calls but the evidence wasn't conclusive that it really happened.
I'll see if I can find the article (or something similar) online and link to it.
For the record, I knew about the hotline and the call-in vote for the death of Jason Todd, but I didn't vote. I wasn't reading Batman or Detective at that time.
I had collected Batman sporadically up to about 1981 and then I read Batman and Detective pretty regularly during the era when the continuity went from Batman to Detective every two weeks and the art was by Gene Colan and Don Newton. Jason Todd was introduced during this time and I liked the way Jason was portrayed. The whole ongoing subplot with Nocturna is one of my favorite ongoing storylines Batman ever had.
When they changed Jason Todd in the wake of the Crisis and he became a street punk and a snot, I quit buying Batman (except for the occasional storyline, like Mudpack) until Knightfall.
I was fairly indifferent to Jason's fate. I hated the whole idea of letting the fans vote, but I wouldn't have been at all upset if I had heard that the writers had killed Jason without any input from the fans.

I don't believe any one has ever come forward and said, "Yeah, I was that guy and I did vote 300 times!" but I don't see any real reason why O'Neil would make this up either.

I'll pay $29.95 a vote to kill Jason Todd off again.
I was out of comics when Jason Todd was killed and read about it in the newspaper. I never even knew Dick had been replaced. I came back to comics just in time for the debut of Tim Drake as the new Robin.

That's okay, we can wait until you do... Maybe I should have gone with "Bat to the Bone." Every time I see this thread title, I am reminded of the time that the great journalist Superman first figured out Batman's secret identity of Lucy Ricardo.

I always loved the various credit boxes over the years that said, "Special Thanks to Bill Finger" or "Special Thanks to Jerry Robinson."

I originally posted these in another thread but this is probably a better place to discuss them. This moment from The Untold Legend of the Batman always struck me as a really important part of Bruce Wayne's life. One that leads him to eventually becoming Batman when he realizes that he will have to work outside of the law. Another memorable scene from the same mini series depicts the moment where Commissioner Gordon first decides to work with Batman. I'm not sure if either of these were originally by Len Wein or something that he adapted from an earlier story.
