wildfire2099 and I ended up discussing this in another thread. Do you currently buy, or have you ever bought, any Marvel trading cards? I collected Marvel Universe Series I through III, and X-Men Series I and II. Of those, I enjoyed Marvel Universe series II the most, as I felt that set put as much thought and care into the information on the back of the cards as they did the art on the front of the cards. I actually learned A LOT about the Marvel Universe by collecting that set, and I enjoyed the art and the hunt quite a bit as well. I still have my old sets somewhere in the basement. I pull it out for a quick browse from time to time. Got my DC Cosmic Cards and Star Trek Next Gen Series I and II cards in there too. I collected Marvel Universe I-III as well and agree that II was the best of the bunch. They basically functioned as mini-Handbooks. I did like the Rookie's concept. Didn't that only appear in the first set? I think so. The first set might have been the only one to feature key back issue cards too, and it was definitely the only one to give a card to a creator (Stan Lee).

I think my favorite card was from II which was Thanos by Art Adams.

On a whim last night, I finally did something I've been considering doing for almost a year now -- I bought full unopened boxes of Marvel Universe Series I and II, and DC Cosmic Cards. I plan to open the boxes (but not the packs) and display them on my desk like I'm at an LCS checkout counter circa 1991.

Bought tons of these back in the 90s. The marvel sets were huge for some reason. I have so many of these still many I still enjoy but wish I'd never bothered with 90% of em. Been trying to find something to do with em for years but can't bring myself to just throw them away. Though I have ultimately just tossed many away. One thing I have done is pass some out to kids at Halloween. If anyone's interetested in paying the shipping you can have em. All types of marvel/DC indie, artist cards, chases etc. Could probably be used to make a cool art project of some kind. I recently discovered though that after so long in storage, my marvel hologram cards have "fused" to their sleeves so beware.

During the trading card boom I loved the comic set most naturally, and have boxes and boxes to deal with someday.
Another quirk I had back then was a desire to buy at least one pack of everything. I've had them in storage most of the time since that boom, but I imagine I have at least a thousand of those 'one packs'. Not sure what my plan was wit them, although at one point I considered trying to get at least one card of every trading card set ever.

I stopped pretty early on with the trading cards. I did the first three series of Marvel, the first two of X-Men, and the first DC set. After that, the thrill died down for me. How many times can you re-buy mostly the same characters with new artists and backgrounds? Marvel Series II and DC Cosmic Cards were the pinnacle for me. After that, the industry was just spinning its wheels.

Same here, though I remember a couple sets (at least one 2099 one) with Hildebrandt brothers art that I got later....there's a newer Marvel Universe one that looks pretty cool, but it's pretty expensive to get all the insert/chase nonsense.

I got the Marvel Masterpiece sets when I was in college and had more dollars than sense. That was about it for me, as I was never a huge fan of the earlier sets, and once I realized that I could get great comics for $1 or less each, there was no point in trying to hunt down random cards and paying upwards of a couple of bucks for those to complete a set.

Oh, yeah. Hello the 90s. I had I think complete sets of Marvel Universe 1 and 2, maybe 3? I had Marvel Masterpiece and I think X-Men 1 and 2. Wasn't there a set of Wolverine cards, too? I don't remember if I had a whole set. I also played one of their collectible card games, Marvel Overpower. That was a LOT of fun. Wow, thanks for the nostalgia. I think my parents still have those somewhere in their house.

I remember collecting tons of different trading cards during the '90s mostly I would pick up various packs here or there; X-Men, Spider-Man, Marvel Masterpieces, etc. One set I almost completed and still have in storage is the Flair 1994 set. The cards were a really high quality and the artwork was quite good. I think I'm only missing 4 or 5 cards from that set. Mostly reproductions of various comic covers and panels that highlighted different important moments in Marvel history. They tried to do the same thing again in '95 but I remember the artwork being pretty poor in comparison.

Well I was feeling nostalgic last night while I half watched TV, so I dug out some of my binders of comics cards that I've accumulated over the years. Though I pretty much gave that up in the early '00's to focus my finances on comics themselves. But back in the 90's comics cards, along with 90's cartoons X-Men, Spiderman and Batman: TAS are what drove me to the source material, despite my folks objections. The 1994 Marvel Masterpieces by Tim & Greg Hildebrant were my first ... Followed by 1995 Flair Marvel Which lead me to the preceding series ... 1994 Flair Marvel All of which were quite influential in wanting to get to know these characters that I was seeing some great art for. Especially the Hildebrant brothers, whose art I continued to seek out when I did get in comics. However looking through my binders of random cards I have accumulated, whether they be a single pack I bought to see what they were like, promo cards, single cards that peeked my interest (the comic dealer I went to would have a "long box" of cards of just random stuff I could sift through for .5 to .10 back then) or cards inserted in comics, which was common then, I found something I forgot I had, and that I thought some of you classic readers would enjoy. So I snapped some pictures I post below of 20 cards. (I hope they came out well enough you can see the art and read the text on the back of the cards.) And I thought it might be a good discussion for those that had done comic related cards, and a place for me to share being nostalgic for my comics cards. I don't recall if it was a separate set or part of that one, but I definitely remember a bunch of cool 2099 cards by the Hildebrandts I have somewhere. They had a Power Blast mini series and the Holofoils, along with a regular card and a gold foil signed card for each of the standard cards in the series.
