My favorite is the Creature Commandos arc in Weird War Tales. The Creature Commandos TPB is cheap if you've never checked them out. A fun read.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Sam Glanzman yet. HE really came to my attention a year or so ago with the strip he did in the Joe Kubert Presents showcase mini DC did, but I have tracked down a bunch of other stuff he's done since. Really good stuff. Like a few others here, I was a late comer to war comics. I had one random issue of G.I. Combat and one random issue of Combat Kelly from Marvel, but the closest I came to reading anything war related regularly was the Invaders. In high school, I started picking up The 'Nam as it was coming out, and that was a brief flirtation with reading war comics. It wasn't until I read Eisner's Last Days in Vietnam that I really started to gain a real appreciation for the genre, and when I got turned on th Joe Kubert's stuff, I started exploring more and more different war titles. -M Yes. Definitely. Shame on me for forgetting Glanzman. The USS Stevens backups are among the best short stories DC has ever ran. The Marvel graphic novels are great as well. Not strictly a war story but perhaps the most poignant thing I've read by Glanzman was his autobiographical piece in Twomorrow's Streetwise publication from about 10-15 years back. Speaking of Twomorrow's there is an excellent article covering Glanzman and USS Stevens in one of their mags (Comic Book Artist maybe?) from about the same vintage. Glanzman is an eminently interesting man and the issue is worth tracking down.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, U.S.S. Stevens screams out for a nice collected edition.
The Glanzman article/interview was in Comic Book Artist #5. Really great tribute to him. And it's available digitally (the magazine) for $3.95 from Twomorrows.
And let's not forget the two Sailor's Story graphic novels from Marvel.

What's the good word on Capt. Savage?
I have the last issue currently and remember a quite good vs. hydra 3-parter from when I was a kid.
Worth picking up all 19 issues?

I know Dan B. swears by it, but I find the series to be a slog. It's a straight up copy of Sgt. Fury, very formulaic.

I'll agree by saying Capt Savage was watered-down Sgt Fury. There are many better options in war books before you get to that.I'd even place Combat Kelly ahead of Savage

I've heard good things about a couple of series from Charlton - The Lonely War of Willy Schultz and the Iron Corporal, both written by Will Franz. But I've never read one. Can anyone shed any light on either series?
