Remember when Republicans were modifying their cars to cause more pollution in protest of breathable air?
That's why a man who has had zero statements rated as true through fact checkers is leading their polls.

I think Sanders has already caused Clinton's campaign to veer left due to his unexpected popularity. Not as far left as he is, but better than what I expected from her. Also, regarding the talk a while back about early front runners not always getting the nomination, I had never even heard of Barrack Obama until he started gaining steam in his campaign in 2008 While I, 5000 miles away, had already read "Dreams from my Father" shortly after he'd given the keynote address at the 2004 Democrat convention.

I think I might have discovered who Sanders was during the government shutdown. Could have been before, but I'm not sure. I knew of Elizabeth Warren for a while now though.

I attempted to watch the debate a bit, it was just too silly.. not a debate at all, really, but more of each people reading a pre-prepared statement vaguely related to a question the hosts asked. A bit of excitement when Rand Paul and Trump spoke out of turn and yelled at each other, but otherwise..yawn. It only held my interest for like 15 minutes.

I managed about four minutes after which I had to make sure that it wasn't the wreckage from a clown car on the stage. Such a concentration of stupid should not be allowed in one place.

It should not have been hosted by Fox News or moderated by a friendly. I mean, I don't expect them to hire Rachel Maddow, but someone who would have possibly asked questions based on popularity from an open online poll, instead of party approved talking points to keep from getting the candidates from disagreeing or straying from the agenda too far.

I watched an hour of the junior varsity debate this afternoon. Oh boy. I kept thinking "Wow! Bobby Jindal is an ignorant jerk" and then "Good lord! Lindsey Graham is a bloodthirsty fiend!"
But Rick Santorum is just positively THE WORST! He totally deserves his Google problem.
I think congratulations are in order that none of the Republicans on this site have ever expressed any support for Rick Santorum or Lindsey Graham.
Good going, guys!
I watched an hour and a half of the evening debate before I decided I had seen enough.
Who is the worst? I can't decide between Huckabee and Scott Walker. Walker's answer to the abortion question was - well, I hope I'm never on an elevator with him. I would be frightened for my life being in such close quarters with a psychopath. And Huckabee is just a frightening moron with no moral compass beyond saying "God" a lot.
Who came out best? Rand Paul.
I can't think of a better indictment of the entire GOP.

One thing I've learned about American politics is that anyone who says "both major parties are just as bad" just isn't paying any attention.

Undoubtedly, the Republican party is packed with more racists, homophobes, religious zealots and gun lovers per square inch. However, the Democrats have just as many power hungry, special interest whores, out and out liars and thieves .Probably more horn-dogs and they will tax you more. Any way you go they are both poison to me

Significant differences between Republicans and Democrats:
War with Iran - If you think this is a good idea, vote GOP. If you actually remember the horrifying results of the Bush years, vote Democrat.
Planned Parenthood - If you are enamored of GOP lies about the Planned Parenthood, vote for them. If you think Planned Parenthood is a helpful organization, vote Democrat.
The Supreme Court - If you think there are enough authoritarian Christianist dingdongs on the Supreme Court, vote Democratic. If you are opposed to gay marriage because somebody told you Jesus hates it, vote Republican.
The War on Women - If you think that small government means throwing up numerous restrictions on women seeking abortions, vote GOP. If you are a consistent and sensible person, vote Democrat.
I really don't see how "The Democrats aren't perfect" is any kind of a thoughtful justification for political apathy or for saying "both sides are just as bad."
If you just aren't that interested in politics or if you are using disgust for the system as a justification for not voting, that's fine for you. But don't act like it's any kind of principled or thoughtful political stance.

Never mind. Now I remember why I intended to stay out of this & any other political threads. Because I don't meet up to certain towering political savants' standards for being "principled" or "thoughtful."

Unless they're screwing small children or large animals I just don't care.

A politician's horndoggityness is just a symptom of why he became a politician in the first place.. A lust for power, greed, manipulation, ego etc. Any inate drive to work for the public's welfare is long gone by the time a politician is running for the President. He's already sold out to interest groups for money and power. He's already been in the system for too long. He's already lied to the public numerous times. The two party system is corrupt and beyond hope of redemption. I could never vote for either one of them.

Here's a question for the folks who think the Democrats are only slightly better than the GOP:
Did you watch the debates last night?
Part of my original statement was that political apathy is caused by people not paying enough attention. (I apologize in advance if my generalizations about people who see little difference between the major parties don't quite jibe with the members who have commented here.) People who say the parties are just the same remind me of people who say the Civil War wasn't about slavery. They think they know enough about the subject to have an opinion because they hear the meme so much, and maybe they've done some cursory research.
But I've been a political junky since I was 8. I got really curious about politics because of Watergate. I thought the president had killed somebody because of the snippets of news I heard in passing. So I started reading the local newspapers and Newsweek as much as I could.
So I've been living and breathing politics for more than 40 years!
So it gets very frustrating to keep hearing vague memes that the two parties are just as bad from people who have very little to back it up.
Take a look at this thread. What have we had supporting the idea that the Democrats are really awful? Well, one member used an episode of South Park to illustrate his political stance. I called it the "South Park justification" for not voting. It really should have a name because I've heard it before. Almost every time I get into a real world discussion about politics with someone who thinks the parties are just as bad, they fail to offer any substantial criticism of the Democrats and they use the "South Park justification."
It's not actually very convincing to people who follow politics. I really don't know why people use it. I think South Park is frequently very funny, but I can't imagine using it to prove that Britney Spears is stupid or that Bono is a bowel movement or that Al Gore is a crazy zealot because of his paranoid obsession with the ManBearPig.
Let's look at the few specific accusations against Democrats. Remember we had a discussion about how Elizabeth Warren was a terrible person because she said she was par Cherokee. You know, even if the very worst interpretation of this story was true, I really don't see why a reasonable person would still be holding it against her. And there's never been a shred of evidence that she didn't sincerely believe she was part-Cherokee. There's never been a shred of evidence that she isn't part-Cherokee. There's never been a shred of evidence that she used her identification as part-Cherokee for advancement.
It's the very definition of a non-story. Even the worst interpretation is a non-story.
Now contrast that with my criticism of Republicans. I've been occasionally posting stories about the GOP candidates, always about what they did or said, and always about events that have just happened. And then there's all the stuff I didn't post.
The Democrats are not perfect. I'm sorry for all the times I ever tried to persuade citizens to vote Democratic with my "Vote for the Democrats because they are perfect!" banners and bumper stickers.
But they are 100 times better than the GOP on every issue.
I've been following the two parties for 40 years. And I'm speaking right now as someone who watched both the debates last night. And I saw the horror that the GOP is going to unleash upon the world if any of these horrible people is elected president.
But if you want to use the "South Park justification" for your political philosophy, feel free.
