Caricature, ugh. UGH. I am not a fan of caricature. What a waste of Frazetta's talents. Well, all of these look like they wanted to get Jack Davis--Frazetta's technique is too heavy-handed for the tone their after. Gray Morrow did a lot of posters for Independent International pictures. And Mego boxes: Morrow also did at least one book in the Childhood of Famous Americans Series. Jim Thorpe, Indian Athlete...which was a favorite of mine around third grade.

So, a bit of a long story that I think I've told before. But when I was eight or nine years old, my aunt married a guy by the name of Doug Beekman. A few years later I got into comics and sci-fi and fantasy novels and discovered that Uncle Doug was a big time artist. I mean, I knew he was an artist, because whenever we visited their little trailer deep in the Vermont woods, it was full of cool paintings. But that's a little different from seeing those paintings on the covers of stories that I loved! I have to say, it was pretty surreal going to the newsstand and buying comics that my uncle had done the cover for - some of which I had already seen in his house! Over the years they were married, I got to watch Uncle Doug as he painted kick-butt covers to awesome comics. He continued to do this after they divorced. At the same time, though, he was doing equally cool work outside of comics - including the cover of what was my favorite novel as a young teen, Source of Magic by Piers Anthony. I still have some stuff he signed for me way back in the day when I was an annoying kid asking him to draw crap for me. Here are some of his comic book covers: And here are some of his non-comics covers. Check out this sick cover for Conan and the Grim Grey God:

Wow, that's cool Scott, hadn't heard that story from you before. The Conan cover you pointed out though is not showing up for me.
-M
Edit for PS I apparently have a lot of his work around here as I recognize most of the pieces you showed as things I have owned.

I replaced the image, so it should be working now. It's worth looking at!
