So in Reptisaurus' thread on why some artists remain popular while others fade away, several people mentioned some artists go on to work outside the comics field. Coincidentally, this evening I ran across a couple articles on the Heavy Metal webpage featuring the art of a couple of classic artists-Frank Frazetta and William Stout-work outside comics (or in Frank's case outside comics or his traditional fantasy illustration field). Both were work they did for the film industry-Frazetta providing a series of movie posters for screwball comedies in the 60s and early 70s and Stout doing production design work for the godawful 1987 Masters of the Universe movie. The classic examples of comic artists working outside comics that I usually run across is Alex Toth and Jack Kirby's work in animation, but these were a little different. So, I thought a thread exploring, sharing, and discussing some of that other work might be interesting. With that in mind...here are some samples.... Frazetta's first posters were 2 he did for What's New Pussycat in 1965... ...The Secret of My Success 1965... ...After the Fox 1966... I can definitely see some classic Frazetta elements in this one more-so than the first two. more to come... -M

More screwball Frazetta... Hotel Paradisio 1966... The Fearless Vampire Killers 1967... only the running monsters on the bottom are Frazetta's work, the top image is not... Fitzwilly 1967... Frazetta was apparently unhappy that they used actual photos of Van Dyke and Barbara Feldon and pasted them on Frazetta's figures (shades of Kirby's Superman faces being redrawn at DC a few years after this maybe?) Mrs. Polifax-Spy (1971) this may be my favorite of the posters I saw... the writer of the article characterizes these Frazetta pieces as funny people running and it is a common compositional theme through a lot of the posters. You can see the full article here-M

Stout's production designs for Masters of the Universe are phenomenal...I don't like Masters of the Universe, but I am floored by these pieces... Skeletor... He-Man... Saurod... She-Ra... full article hereI am not as familiar with Stout's stuff as I am Frazetta, but the few samples I have seen here and elsewhere (The Rock and Roll High School movie poster for the Ramones is one that sticks out as well) has me intrigued t explore more. I am sure these are produced on a deadline, but it looks and feels like the artists have a little more time to get the art the way they way it more so than just to get it done to keep the client happy.... I am intrigued by these glimpses and I would be curious to see some of the works outside comics juxtaposed with the comic work to see how styles evolved or adapted for the job... -M

Frazetta may have taken umbrage at their pasting photos of the stars on the Fitzwill poster but who can blame them? Not a single female figure on those first four posters look remotely like the actresses they're supposed to depict. I defy you to point out Shirley Jones or Honor Blackman in the Secret of My Success poster!

I'd say the gal in the nice brown leather boots and gold dress.
To steal your thunder ...
"I summon John Steed's lesser known partner!"

Caricature, ugh. UGH. I am not a fan of caricature. What a waste of Frazetta's talents.

Jack Kirby's concept art for the film Lord of Light. The film wasn't made, but the art was later used for the fake film used to rescue hostages from Iran, as depicted in the Best Picture winning "Argo." The original cover page and the altered version:

I really like those Frazetta posters. No idea if the likenesses are good (I only know what Woody Allen looks like out of all of them.. he's pretty good), but they're pretty cool as movie posters go.

Well, all of these look like they wanted to get Jack Davis--Frazetta's technique is too heavy-handed for the tone their after. Gray Morrow did a lot of posters for Independent International pictures. And Mego boxes:

They should be happy to be involved in any capacity. (Seriously, those look awesome. I didn't know Frazetta had that kind of range. I thought his skill set was barbarians and also other barbarians that look more-or-less like the first barbarian.)

Jack Davis, of course, did a ton of movie posters and advertising. Wally Wood did a lot of outside work also. One of my favorites of his is covers and text illos for the "Childhood of Americans" book series. He also did some amazing SF Digest covers.
