storySwinton is in talks with Marvel to join the cast of Dr. Strange as the Ancient One. Marvel had been seeking a male actor but found no one who fit their needs, so is now pursuing the Oscar Winner. She has played other roles in comic based movies but this would be her first work with Marvel Studios. It's an interesting choice, and I am sure there will be a segment of fandom who complains because they are casting a woman in the role, but I think she will bring a presence to the screen in the role and hope the deal gets worked out. -M

OK, that's a little weird to me. I wonder if they're going to have the character be female, or will she be portraying a male character? Either way, they need the Ancient One to look really, really old, or it's going to feel all wrong.

I can see why they're thinking of her--she's played androgynous/gender-bending roles in the past (Orlando, Constantine) and has been well-received for doing so. And she definitely has the necessary gravitas for such a role. ... they need the Ancient One to look really, really old, or it's going to feel all wrong. If Swinton turns out to be unavailable, how 'bout...

I'm of the firm belief that the Keith Richards of the Marvel Universe will go on to become an Elder of the Universe. Mark my words.

Feige talks in depth about the Doc Strange mvoie including the casting of Tilda Swinton... hereOther interesting tidbits about how the changes to Bleeker Street in contemporary NY impact the presentation of the Sanctum Sanctorum and how the "phony mysticism" of Doc Strange created by Lee and Ditko needs tobe preserved to captaure the flavor of Doc in themovie. -M

Well it looks like Marvel is talking to Rachel McAdams to play the female lead in the Doc Strange movie-character not identified, but could be Clea, or if they are not using Dormammu right off the bat perhaps someone like Victoria Bentley who filled the role of female mystic before Clea and the Dark Dimension was introduced in Strange Tales. CBR articleWhatever her role, McAdams would be a solid addition to the cast. -M

Not that I'm complaining about that choice, mind you, as he's a great actor and one I've been a fan of since since "Serenity", but rather the absurdity of calling Marvel on the carpet for changing the race of one character but not acknowledging other changes they've made in order to add diversify to the MCU (such as Idris Elba as Heimdall)

Dr. Strange concept art is very darkAccording to reports of those who attended the July 30th press conference in South Africa where concept art for the Dr. Strange movie was shown, the design is very dark, "borderline horror movie dark" as one attendee put it. from the article... Sounds like this will be a bit different tone than Ant-Man and GotG. -M
