In the late 60s I had a reel-to-reel tape recorder and started taping all the songs I liked. Sure saved money from buying 45rpm records. Did it for several years I recall, from 1967 til 1970. Captured lots of radio chatter and jingles too. Started with AM ended with FM. Had maybe 100 tapes, hundreds of hours. But threw it all away when I abandoned tape and switched to buying LPs exclusively.
I used to tape songs off of the radio too, but I was doing it from about 1981 until, say, 1986. However, I was very careful to edit out as much DJ chat as I could -- I was a demon on that play and record button, I tells ya! Proper skills!
I still have some of those cassettes somewhere, but they're not complete programs at all, just the songs, often with rather abrupt endings, just before the DJ openned his mouth.
Ah well. Used it as a come on with what turned out to be my first girlfriend. Invited her over to my apartment to listen to my collection. Wound up making a special tape just for "ahem" romantic excursions> T Rex's Bang-A-Gong Get It On was the first song
Smooth.
Yeah for the most part I was the pause/record man to just get the songs. Got to the point in my AM days where I could identify a song and whether I already taped it within one second. But there were some times I just let it run and record til the tape ran out. For Instance, I got my first reel to reel winter of 1967, just in time for the annual event where, the last week of the year, WABC AM played the Top 100 Songs in count down order. I wanted the whole thing and just kept taping, napping in between, all day and all night
