At some point (I think in the late 1980s) I owned a horizontal tracking turntable. It looked pretty cool and performed as well as anything else. It looked something like this but I don't recall the actual brand I owned

I owed a number of different sound systems during the course of my life, from 45 Victrolas to reel-to-reel tape players and I guess at this point I just wanted something different. Never did go for a quadraphonic system (thank god) nor every owned a 8 track player (thank another god)

I picked up an original 1967 U.S. pressing of Country Joe & The Fish's Electric Music for the Mind and Body today and was surprised to see the letters WOR-FM scrawled on the label in marker pen. I did a quick internet search and Wikipedia tells me that apparently WOR-FM was a New York City based radio station that played progressive or psychedelic music between 1966 and 1972, when it changed its call sign to WXLO. It was the first freeform station of its kind in New York and had such such radio luminaries as Murray "the K" Kaufman, Scott Muni and Rosko among its roster of DJs.

It seems reasonable to assume that this particular copy of Country Joe & The Fish's first album was at one time a part of the station's LP collection. How it came to end up in the South East of England is anybody's guess, but I wondered whether any of our older New York-based members, like Ish Kabbible and maybe Icctrombone (he's from NY, right?), recall listening to WOR-FM?

I think they were frequently given away as prizes, particularly the LPs, because the stations were more likely to play 45s of the hit songs than delve into deeper tracks on an LP. As to how it got to the U.K....well...record collectors mail order and interweb order stuff from all over.

That's cool. There's something special or at least interesting about knowing where your records came from. I have a promo copy of The Byrds' The Notorious Byrd Brothers LP which, being an advance promo copy, would've been one of the earliest copies off the presses. The guy I bought it from was located in Los Angeles (Which is where The Byrds were based) and he says that it had sat virtually unplayed in the collection of one of Columbia Records' top LA promotional men for close to 50 years before I acquired it. It had only come on the market because the guy had died. It plays and sounds like a brand new record and has definitely gone to a good home.

Yeah, that's true -- I order LPs from the States fairly regularly myself. Still, it's semi-unusual to find American made LPs in this country. I guess I was just wondering how this particular record escaped the radio station's collection and found its way here.

Sure, I remember WOR-FM radio in NYC. When I made the leap from a AM radio listener to FM in 1969, WOR was the first FM station I regularly listened to. There was a choice of about 3 free form rock stations at that time. WOR seemed the most accessible of them for a young evolving rock aficionado. They were very big on The Moody Blues at that tome and even incorporated a Moodies song as part of the radio station's theme jingle.

Murray The K must have been gone by the time I listened. Scott Muni too, he moved over to WNEW FM where he became a fixture for decades. But yeah, I recall listening to Rosko and the other DJ I remember was Bobby something-or-other who was known officially on the station as The Wizard. Sometime by 1972 or so, they became more commercial and homogenous as if the individual DJs no longer controlled their own show's programming

But as I said there were 2 other stations I was aware of on the FM dial in 1969. WABC FM which later became WPLJ. The other, as mentioned was WNEW FM. This was the one I finally settled for. I believe they were really the first, having become free form rock in 1967. They were far and away the best. Scott Muni ended up there. They had a great assembly of talented DJs. Most importantly, the rock community, both local and passing through must have agreed because this was the station rock artists would visit for on-air interviews. John Lennon must have called it a second home because it seemed he would just pop in for an interview unannounced many, many times. The station did a ton of live simulcast concerts and breaking news for upcoming tour dates. It lasted as a classic rock station, at least in it's old form, still mixing in new music in its programming, up until about 10-15 years ago. Finally gave up the ghost .

You would have enjoyed the late Scott Muni. His voice was very deep and distinctive and his specialty was the English rock scene. He had a daily one hour "Things From England" subset during his show, playing stuff hardly heard in the States. Made many, many trips to the UK as well and broadcasted from there. Richard Neer now is a sports talk host for WFAN , an all sports talk station
Dave Herman got busted for kiddie porn in 2013 and died awaiting trial
Jonathan Schwartz abandoned rock and became a syndicated radio host concentrating on Sinatra and light jazz
Alison Steele, the Nightbird, pioneering female jock sadly passed away years ago

I missed the WOR-FM era. 1972 is when I started listening to AM Top 40, so I was late to the FM rock party. I do remember WNEW and WPLJ, and I recall noticing that magazine ads for stereo equipment usually showed the tuner with the frequency of one or the other of those two stations - 102.7 and 95.5 IIRC.

Yeah, I'm sure I would've enjoyed him. I wish that there were more vintage "air checks" (as I believe radio aficionados and collectors call them) available to buy. They're such an educational and groovy window into the era for people like me who missed that period and would serve as glorious nostalgia for aging baby boomers too.

Back in the '90s there was a sadly brief, but nonetheless excellent, series of compilation CDs called The Golden Age of Underground Radio which featured an hour and a quarter of a particular underground DJ's show. The First volume featured the legendary Tom Donahue on KSAN out of San Francisco and the second volume featured B. Mitchel Reed (in his laid back late '60s persona, not his manic early '60s style) on KMET out of Los Angeles. These CDs had phenomenal sound quality, lots of original ads and jingles and some amazing late '60s rock too. I know that you're an East Coast dude, but as a vintage radio lover if you can get your hands on either of these CDs, you will not be disappointed.

I also have a couple of CDs like this that collect two hours worth of mid-60s broadcasts from the British off-shore pirate radio station Radio Caroline. Again, these are fascinating to listen to...imagining that you're tuning in on your transitor radio to hear those illicit rock 'n' roll sounds that the BBC radio would only play on Saturday mornings. I'm sure that I don't need to tell you how important the pirate radio stations were in the UK during the early and mid-'60s.

Lastly, I have a rather poor quality bootleg CD of dear old John Peel's late night Radio London show, The Perfumed Garden. Peel played a lot of British progressive music, but he also delighted in playing tracks by then-obscure American bands like The Velvet Underground, Love, and Grateful Dead for example. I guess he was sort of doing the opposite of what Scott Muni was doing with his "Things From England" hour.

Yeah, like I say, I really wish that these kind of late '60s/early '70s radio recordings were more readily available.

Yeah for the most part I was the pause/record man to just get the songs. Got to the point in my AM days where I could identify a song and whether I already taped it within one second. But there were some times I just let it run and record til the tape ran out. For Instance, I got my first reel to reel winter of 1967, just in time for the annual event where, the last week of the year, WABC AM played the Top 100 Songs in count down order. I wanted the whole thing and just kept taping, napping in between, all day and all night
