aka the thread were hipsters talk about how much "warmer" vinyls sounds. I know there are a few of us who collect and listen to records so I thought a specific place to talk about them might be pretty cool. I would love to see pics of peoples' collections and even record players and look forward to reading peoples thoughts on the subject. Personally I don't have a large collection and only collect vinyls to listen to. Probably my favorite piece is this Sun Records Johnny Cash And The Tennessee Two Original Golden Hits Volume 1. It sounds great and there's not a bad song on it. It's in pretty decent condition and I actually feel pretty lucky to own it.

I'm a part time vinyl enthusiast. I have a decent middle-of-the-line turntable, a great pre-digital amplifier, solid speakers, and a large collection of vinyl largely liberated from second hand shops and then cleaned lovingly. I only play my vinyl when I really want to experience the music as opposed to having it on in the background. I don't listen anywhere near as often as I should. The single record I've probably played the most is Led Zepplin II. It's always been a favorite of mine. The Who's Quadrophenia gets a lot of love too.

I've got near complete vinyl collections of every Duran Duran, Iron Maiden and Megadeth record. That's because Italy pressed only 100 vinyl copies of DD's Lay Lady Lay record and I don't have it.
I appreciate album art (esp Heavy Rock) better on a 12 inch LP than a cd.
Total vinyl collection between myself and Mr Jez...about 450ish. We use a Audio Technica AT-LP1240-USB Direct Drive DJ Turntable at home and in the bar.

I'm definitely a vinyl collector. As you predicted Jesse412, I love the "warmth" of how vinyl sounds. The fantastic bass response of vinyl is another definite advantage that it has over CD. There's also something very satisfying about the "ceremony" or "ritual" of listening to a vinyl record -- the way you have to interact with the media, turning it over half way through, gently lowering the stylus down onto the grooves etc. Plus, the large album art is another reason why I love collecting LPs. Having said that, I love CDs too and have a pretty descent collection of those. I guess I have somewhere in the region of 500+ LPs and around 2,000+ CDs from all sorts of different genres (I'm into everything from blues and Indian classical music to electronica and classic rock, and all points inbetween). Here are a couple of snaps of my LP collection... And here's my newest acquisitions pile... I only tend to buy vintage albums on vinyl (or recent re-pressings of vintage albums) because listening to these albums on vinyl is how they were meant to be heard. They were originally recorded on analogue tape, mastered for vinyl and intended to be replayed on your home system through an analogue stylus. I don't see the point of buying the latest indie rock band's album's on vinyl because they will of almost certainly been recorded digitally or, at the very least, been converted to digital somewhere along the mastering/manufacturing production line. If I want to listen to an analogue format, I want the entire recording/mastering process from the microphone in the studio that records the voice/instruments to the sound coming out of my speakers to be analogue. Anyway, here's some pix of my CD collection too, just for kicks... As for my hi-fi set up, I currently have a Rega Planar 3 turntable (including the RB300 tone arm) with an Ortofon 2M Blue stylus cartridge fitted... The signal from the turntable is then run through a Rega Fono MkII Moving Magnet phono stage... I also have a NAD 304 amplifier (which you can see in the above picture), a pair of Technics SB-F911 speakers, a Naim CD5 CD player, and an Awia AD-F810 cassette deck. I use QED QUNEX 2 interconnects between the CD player and the amp, and Atlas Equator MkIII interconnects between the phono stage and the amp.

Myself, I have the Johnny Cash Original Sun Singles '55 - '58 double LP compilation that Sundazed Records put out a decade or so ago. Total vinyl collection between myself and Mr Jez...about 450ish. Nice. We want pictures!

My son Nathan is the vinyl collector. Though his collection is in my house as he's at college. The vast majority have come from thrift stores and estate sales. So I'd guess that he averages about 75 cents an album. What he's most proud of is a fairly extensive collection of 78s. That was major criteria when I bought his turntable for Christmas about five years back now...that it play 78s. I do have an old RCA Victor record player/radio that I bought at an estate sale a few years back. I still haven't gotten around to getting it running. The radio will play, but I need to work on the record player. It came with all the original documentation...including the hand-written sales slip.

What sort of music does he collect on 78? I'm imagining it's maybe old jazz or blues records, but of course I may be wrong about that.

My older brother has about 250-300 Jazz Records that he inherited from his Grandfather and has about close to 1500 records of his own private stock and every once in a while he plays them. I missed records from those days.
I just loved the sounds that they make.

I have all my parents' LPs, including several Longines Symphonette Society boxed sets (the reason I know the words to so many Jazz Age songs) and an entire boxful of 78s. I also have a functioning turntable but the former haven't made it onto the latter yet. No particular reason, other than time. I admit I'm one of those folks who think the "vinyl is warmer" thing is delusional BS but I really do want to listen to my folks' records eventually, if only for nostalgia's sake.
Cei-U! I summon the original pressing of "Halleluah, I'm a Bum!"

Ah, the old days of Lps. When you had a favorite side of an album that you played constantly and just never played the other side that much. Being a child of the 60s and 70s, I look at these old album covers and try to remember how many joints I rolled on a particular one. Memories!!
The real challenge is to find anyone nostalgic for 8-track cartridges. Even in their heyday, I don't recall anyone particularly liking them but they were the only choice available for cars. This , of course, was before the Dolby System came into play and cassettes could then be used for music. Once that happened, 8-track disappeared thank god

I have a good friend who collects vinyl and I try to gift him with some special items when I can. The last record I found for him was Monty Python's Matching Tie and Handkerchief (1973). This is the famous "three-sided album." One side of the record was mastered with two sets of concentric grooves, which play different material (or "sides") depending on where the stylus is dropped. Adding to the confusion, both sides of the record are labeled "Side 2."

I've got near complete vinyl collections of every Duran Duran, Iron Maiden and Megadeth record. Awesome! I remember finding an Iron Maiden import as a kid at a flea-market that was shaped like circular saw blade. I've never been able to find it again and I've always kicked myself for not picking it up. Here are a couple of snaps of my LP collection... That's an amazing collection and set up! I need to find some plastic sleeves like that.

What sort of music does he collect on 78? I'm imagining it's maybe old jazz or blues records, but of course I may be wrong about that. Mostly country, western swing and big band. We're in Idaho. Jazz records are very uncommon and blues records are unheard of. That said he has some cool 78s. The crown jewel is probably Merle Travis' 1946 Folk Songs of the Hills 78 album.
