There are certain issues that make it annoyingly difficult to complete a run of a particular series, because they're worth a lot more than all the other issues, sometimes by several orders of magnitude. Incredible Hulk #181 and Amazing Spider-Man #129 are obvious examples, but even Incredible Hulk #182 counts, because it has a Wolverine cameo appearance or something. And that's supposed to be a pretty good comic.
Others that come to mind are Lois Lane #106, Hero for Hire #9 (the one with the "where's my money, honey" line), and Uncanny X-Men #129. Miracleman #15 does not count because all the other late Eclipse issues of Miracleman are just as elusive.
Does anyone have other examples of this phenomenon?

Silver Surfer #4 drove me crazy for years; its increased value due entirely to perceived "scarcity" (which meant it was only printed in the low hundred thousands) is utterly absurd. I finally managed to acquire one for a reasonable price as part of a larger transaction a few years back.
I'm also experiencing a significant dilemma regarding New Mutants #98 right now. I'm almost certainly going to sell mine, but I love re-reading that series from beginning to end and, even though it was during the Liefeld stretch, not having one issue is seriously going to bug me.
Great to have you back, Aaron!

In the 1980s, I collected Batman and Detective Comics rather haphazardly. That was when the continuity went from Batman to Detective and back again (with art by Gene Colan and Don Newton). I would get three or five or six issues in a row when I liked the storyline and then I might miss three or four issues. (When I stopped getting Batman comics (around the time of Detective #580), I probably had 60% of the issues from Detective #511 to #550, and I was only missing one issue from #550 to #580. My Batman collection (#340 to #410) was about the same.)
Four or five years ago, I decided to fill in the blanks in that run because I had come to really love it over the years. And guess which issue I was missing? Batman #357, the first appearance of Jason Todd!
Yeah, that was a pain. I got all the other issues over a six-month period for reasonable prices, but Batman #357 cost more than I wanted to pay. I haunted eBay for months, bidding on mid-grade copies. (I think my limit was $20.)
I finally got lucky and got a decent copy for what I wanted to pay.

Silver Surfer #4 drove me crazy for years; I think I'm just going to give up on that one for myself. It's always way more expensive than its neighboring stories were. I hold pretty strict to a $20 maximum rule. I'd be willing to go up to $30 for that one, but still never see it. I really only want it for the backup story, which I have resigned to just finding scans of.

I wasn't going to mention Wonder Woman #199 and #200, because most of the issues from that run are pretty expensive. But I think those issues do count because the Jeff Jones covers drive up the price. I've never seen either of them at a price I was willing to pay. And those covers are the only reason I want those issues.

Thanks for the welcome, shaxper. Are you on Facebook? I asked this same question on Facebook and someone also mentioned New Mutants #98.

It always annoys me that Birds of Prey #8 is going for a crazy price as compared to the rest of the run. I have most of that series but refuse to pay 80 bucks for that issue.

Albedo #2 Actually, #1 goes for almost as much, and #4 is pricey too.

Albedo #2 Actually, #1 goes for almost as much, and #4 is pricey too. Well, #1 is worth more than the rest of the issues, but that's not uncommon. In these recent auctions for #1, #2, and #4, all from the same seller, all raw, all sold in the same timeframe, all with similar listing titles, and all advertised in the same general grade, we get #1 sold at $26 www.ebay.com/itm/Albedo-Anthropomorphics-1-1st-Printing-High-Grade-9-0-or-Higher-Very-Rare-1984-/321771767585?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aeb178721&nma=true&si=Fmo5RiLg8JGqkFFC0YGEVszhaMU%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557#2 sold at $1,233 www.ebay.com/itm/Albedo-Anthropomorphics-2-1st-Usagi-Yojimbo-Very-High-Grade-9-0-or-Higher-1984-/321771771583?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aeb1796bf&nma=true&si=Fmo5RiLg8JGqkFFC0YGEVszhaMU%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557and #4 sold at $31 www.ebay.com/itm/Albedo-Anthropomorphics-4-3rd-Usagi-Yojimbo-Very-High-Grade-9-0-or-Higher-1985-/321771776561?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aeb17aa31&nma=true&si=Fmo5RiLg8JGqkFFC0YGEVszhaMU%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Journey Into Mystery #112 drove me nuts. The price is jacked up because of a stupid Hulk appearance. Who gives a crap.
It wasn't actually harder to find than the other issues around it, though, just way more expensive than it needed to be.
Now, actually hard to find? Boy Comics #10 is much harder to find than #9 or #11, and more expensive as well, even though all three are classic covers for the run.

That's extremely unusual. Usual selling price is $150-500. Usually more like $60-80, but not all that off. The problem with using one ended ebay auction as evidence is that prices invariably fluctuate across sales.

Even at that pretty far off from the $1200-$2000 range #2 goes for. But they are going for more than they were last time I looked several years ago. I have an Albedo #4 and Critters #1 though. If the prices continue to climb I'll be selling those off.

These comics aren't hard to find, just hard to pay for My current headache is a NM copy of DC Comics Presents #47.... Superman & He-Man. You can get most of the other issues from 27 straight up for dollar bin prices or less if you pick them in lots...but #47 bites you in the arse.
