Yeah, true. I can't think of many comics that are truly hard to find as an anomaly in a series of otherwise common comics.
Comics that have been hard to find for me regardless of price Angry Youth Comix volume one Elflord 1980 series The few issues of The Sound Of Drowning I don't have The (two?) issue(s) of Slam Bang with Ranlph Snart in it.

The last few issues of Ostrander's and Mandrake's The Spectre go for quite a bit if you can find them. It's a highly regarded series (and deservedly so) but those last two or three issues command higher asking prices than the issues which preceeded it. I suppose however, that this is simply a matter of it having a lower than normal print run. I don't know how low however, since I believe this was one of those series that ended simply because the author felt he had no further tales to tell rather than not selling enough to stay afloat.
Also,
I can't believe how much people are asking (getting?) for Batman 227 which features Neal Adams artwork on cover only. It's that famous cover homaging Detective 31 and while it's an iconic image, I'm amazed at how much more in demand this issue seems to be compared with not only other Batman issues from that time, but in comparison with most of Adams work on the character. Other comics which predate this but have historical significance (ie. Batman 200, 217) have Adams covers but go for far less, while issues which contain both covers and interior artwork by the man do so as well. Even other classic covers such as Adams Batman 244 (Batman laying defeated at the feet of Ras al Ghul in the desert) which is arguably the best known Ras al Ghul tale with Adams interiors go for less.
Nothing against Batman 227 - actually, I think the best thing about it isn't even the cover but the Denny O Neil/Irv Novick tale The Demon of Gothos Manor itself - but it seems strange.

It has been a while for me looking for "newer" books but a few years back I was looking for a few books to complete runs for my Son and had a hard time finding them. ASM 430 AND 431 TRANSFORMERS 80

Justice League Europe 33-the whole series is dollar or even quarter bin fodder, except 33 because it has a Sonic the Hedgehog comic ad insert that was his first appearance in comics, leading to the book selling for $12-15 and being in demand by video game fans and not just comic fans (most of whom wouldn't touch the book with a 10 ft. pole outside a dollar bin)
Starslayer-again most of the series is bargain fodder, except #2 which has the first appearance of Rocketeer in a 2 page back up causing it to command $10-15 prices in some circles and #5 which has the 4th Groo story, which sometimes commands higher prices (and sometimes doesn't depending where you look).
Micronauts #8 series is another dollar bin dweller, but #8 with the first appearance of Capt. Universe, now commands around $30 an issue
add DC Comics Presents #49 with an early modern Black Adam appearance commanding around $50 now to those weird DCCP issues that are hard to track down affordably
Batman #386 with the first Black Mask appearance can now sell in the $100 range
Marvel Team Up 95 withthe first appearance of Mockingbird has shot up as well, but not the issues around it
there are tons and tons of these, the question is will the prices hold up and will they become the new keys of a new generation of collectors, or are they a hype fueled surge that will eventually fade away?

Batman #222 is another one that has gone sky high kind of out of nowhere. I got my copy around 2008 and it was maybe $10-12 bucks for VG, mostly at the price level that any Adams Batman related cover from that period runs but at some point it must have crossed into Beatles collectors mania and it is like a $100+ book even in VG now.
The first appearance of Batgirl has gone up a ton too.
I think the New Mutants #98 is a bit of fools gold as that issue sold a gazillion back in the 80s and there are tales of some dealers having cases of that one and just putting them out one or two a convention or deal online.

Even at that pretty far off from the $1200-$2000 range #2 goes for. That's for a NM grade. it's because the black on the cover wears off absurdly easily. It's been a while since I checked, but a VF copy of #2 didn't used to go for around $250.

Most are slabbed, and the ones that aren't are four figure comics more than nine times out of ten. it's out of my price range in any grade. But #1 isn't.

Currently Lonestar is paying $42.77 for a 6.0 copy of #2 and they usually price books at 3-4x what they pay in cash prices. Anything higher than 6.0 they are doing best offer which is:
That would put the mid-grade selling for about $260 or so if they had it in stock. They do have both slabbed and raw copies of 3 and 4 in stock, so you can look at those prices to see.
According to the CGC census info they have, only 72 of the 2000 copy print run was slabbed by CGC, a far cry from most.

New Teen Titans #2 and #10 are hard to find at a good price because Deathstroke appears. I still don't have a copy of #2. I never really collected G.I. Joe, but I remember that was another series where #2 was much more expensive that #1.
I found Uncanny X-Men #244 was hard to find because it was the first appearance of Jubilee. Then, amazingly, I found a copy on Ebay for a dollar and change.
The "pocket universe Superboy" issues of LOSH, Superman, and Action Comics are harder to get a good price then the issues before and after. I think it's the most expensive issue of Baxter series of LOSH.

add DC Comics Presents #49 with an early modern Black Adam appearance commanding around $50 now to those weird DCCP issues that are hard to track down affordably Weird. I didn't know that one! Speaking as the world's leading expert on team-up books I should keep track of this stuff better! (I got mine out of the dollar bins.) I've got a full set of DCCP and the "rules" that I set for myself meant that I could never use the internet - and it seemed like a fair number of dealers wouldn't consider any bronze age Superman books to be "hot" and just sell 'em for two bucks or so. I've found more than one DCCP # 47s cheap. The last issue I bought of the run was # 8. Go figure.

I think it's the most expensive issue of Baxter series of LOSH. I find that LoSH #50 of the Baxter series (the Legion battles the Time Trapper) is a lot pricier than the pocket universe issues. I have yet to find #50 in a comic shop.

I think it's the most expensive issue of Baxter series of LOSH. That was definitely true in my experience. #38 was the hardest issue to find when I was completing my run of LSH v3.

I'm also experiencing a significant dilemma regarding New Mutants #98 right now. I'm almost certainly going to sell mine, but I love re-reading that series from beginning to end and, even though it was during the Liefeld stretch, not having one issue is seriously going to bug me. No need to sell then. Right?
