Not a thing, from what I can see on Mike's page. I'm now a great admirer of Morrison's Invisibles, Ennis's Preacher, and even Miller's Sin City, but at this time I was totally unaware of the Vertigo stuff and it wasn't until years later that I read them in trade. I was still reading comics, but either none of them were out this month in 1997 or Mike doesn't have them on his site.

September 1997 and my buys are dwindling, mostly from lack of interest in what is being published and the "new cool art/writing" everyone seems to be doing.

I haven't read my Tangent comics in a while, but I remember GL being my favorite. I also got both Joker issues and Nightwing and Wonder Woman. Nightwing take was kind of interesting but nothing profound. I actually don't remember much about the Joker issues and WW though. Maybe I should read them again. Hmmmmm.

I liked the Captain Boomerang story, in Tangent: Green Lantern, where he is an Australian Blackhawk, flying V-shaped pusher planes (somewhat inspired by the Curtiss XP-55 Ascender...

I remember zero about this issue but it's Kevin Nowlan. That's darned near good enough for me right there. Jeph Loeb can be very, very good. I like Tim Sale. The Long Halloween is one of the most over-rated series I have ever read. Not bad, just not nearly what it's hyped up to be. I should probably sell my copies. Loved original Valiant. Acclaim was interesting, though hit and miss. Waid turned X-O Manowar into sort of an Iron Man, which wasn't as good as the original. Bloodshot was good and Acclaim's version of a Frankenstein military weapon was an improvement on a solid idea. Didn't hate Giffen's Dr Fate I mostly liked Heroes Reborn (Image) maxi-series, though I liked the FF and Iron Man the best. Some fans said Balent shouldn't be drawing Catwoman with such a large rack, but I had a girlfriend at the time that was truly built like that. Mostly didn't buy this run but loved the next run around 2000 by Brubaker

I did the Earth X preview and the first issue; but, was underwhelmed by the story. Better character ideas than story, for me. Astro City was one of the truly great, classic stories, as Jack-in-the-Box faces his sons, from the future. Or are they really his sons? Nice commentary on the classic take on heroes, vs the more violent modern take, when you compare the JITB versions. Negative Burn was a good, solid anthology and it was coming to an end, in the next issue. Power of Shazam is kind of a palate cleanser, as it was about to cross over with Starman, for two months. Speaking of Starman, this was a terrific Mist-themed episode, as she proves how deadly she has become by taking out the newly-reformed Justice League Europe, including Blue Devil. It was part of the reason I am so down on how the Mist ends up, in Grand Guignol. Terminal City: Aerial Graffiti is the sequel to the Dean Motter/Michael Lark Vertigo book, about a retro-future city, down on its luck. This second mini focused on Charity's sister, Hope, who is caught up in some nasty business. Great characters, great setting, nice mix of mystery, comedy, and action. Love to see this adapted into film or tv, as it would make for great visual fodder and offer something for the actors. Uncle Sam I picked up because of Alex Ross but was really impressed with Steve Darnall's story. It explores the seamier underside of American History, shining a light on the parts that history textbooks tend to shove under the rug , since it doesn't fit into the "exceptional" image that tends to be presented. It also fit my complete disgust with American politics and the influence of corporations and other monied interests, to the detriment of the populace. Save that for the Politics Thread, though.
