I have gotten a lot of these Marvels and some DCs in the last couple of years and i think it was a very good three and a half year window of high quality with a few missteps backwards here and there (that massive neck and muscles thing with characters not looking much at all sometimes as they had originally). Iron Man had an artist whose work I very much dislike but there was a good story spinning off his origin. I think the same or a similar artist turned up in an X-men Unlimited (a tree trunk necked and thighed Cyclops is just wrong to me). The other exception is if something gets overly cartoony; I like Wieringo and the Dodsons usually, but there are others who are too much, like Bachallo often. You will have one issue of a title be very standard, Dan Jurgens, Adam Kubert, but then if the next issue is Robe Liefeld flashback with poor understanding of basic construction, or wildly cartoonish... good lord is that a bad thing to open up. I really have taken to the digital colouring by Liquid and other studios when not too overdone however. The computer lettering seems to go very wrong every now and then though. The best of times and the worst of times?

June 2000, not picking up much and kind of in-between with life. Current job at Physical Therapy company boss is taking advantage of me and keeping my pay low while I am the Front Office check in/scheduler/insurance billing clerk. Been with them 5 years and newhires are being hired off the street with no skills for $1-2 more and I train them?!? Sticking it out for the moment but am looking at options to leave, applying with a few other companies/physician offices and insurance companies. Will remain with them for a few more months until September. Tell you about the changes then! Avengers 31 Creature Commandoes 4, 3, 2, 1 (i missed the others when they came out and found 4 so immediately tracked down other 3) Flash 162,/163 Crimson Plague 1. PEREZ! Hitman 51/52 Impulse 63 JSA 13 Starman 68

July 2000... There were only six months left to my regular comic-book buying days, as I was soon to move back from the United States and away from a convenient LCS. Also, the Canadian dollar exchange rate meant that a floppy would cost $3,566.72.
Cerebus #256, and as I recall I was as mesmerized by Dave Sim's use of classic writers (Fitzgerald, then Hemingway) in the main story as I was irritated by the opinionated and pretentious diatribes he padded each issue with. The artwork remained amazing throughout, in large part due to Gerhard's patience in rendering intricate backgrounds.
Finder #18. One of my favourite indy titles, ever. Carla Speed McNeil's creativity never dried up, and her world was truly unique.
Hellblazer #152, with a bunch of Daryl Dixon prototypes... Brian Azarello did a good job at the start of his run!
Hellblazer special: Bad Blood #1. Accept no substitute... THIS is John Constantine, grown old. (Oh, and Chas is still alive too). Jamie Delano knows the character.
Legion Lost #5. That was an excellent series! I never thought the Legion required a smaller team for creators and writers to focus on, but it worked quite well in this 12-issue limited series.
Preacher #65. That series stayed strong till the very end. And boy, is Cassidy the kind of toxic friend you don't want to have... except he's so much fun to be around, normally.

LODK Siege is Marshall Rogers, back doing Batman, which is why I picked it up. Kree/Skrull war was nostalgia, as was Essential Cap. JSA continues to be good superhero stuff; but I hated the annual and really hated Goyer sticking his grubby little copycat paws into Archie Goodwin's work, by tying the new Nemesis (gotta keep the trademarks going) to the head of The Council, from Manhunter. At least Kurt Busiek got Archie's blessing to do Power Company. Top Ten is its usual fun. Starman is winding down and we are nearing the end of Grand Guignol. I didn't care for this storyline, but, it finishes better than it started, though I still think Robinson dropped the ball with Nash, the female Mist. he had her built up to be the Big Bad for Jack, then just killed her off for her father to take over. On top of things, the Ragdoll storyline got dropped entirely and he gets inserted in here as an afterthought, since Robinson never got around to it. Thankfully, he was more on form with the final storylines and issues. My comic shop visits, by this point are barely weekly and would start to become bi-weekly and then monthly, as so little of the market enticed me and the good stuff I could always get with my employee discount, at B&N, which is what I started doing.

August 2000; the countdown to my leaving the USA for Canada had begun (only six months to go). I didn't realize that would also be the end of my frequenting a LCS.
Strangely enough, I didn't use those few remaining months to binge on new comics. Looking at all those covers on Mike's Amazing World's Newsstand, I am struck by how unappealing most of that stuff was. It's not that there weren't many good comics back then, but there definitely was a ton of crap to wade through before finding the good ones. Anyway...
Cerebus #257. Dave Sim's editorial pages were pretty irritating, but the story and art were still engrossing.
Hellblazer #153. Brian Azarello was writing a different Constantine, but one that felt true, with a certain David Lynch vibe in this particular storyline.
Hellblazer special: Bad Blood #2. Jamie Delano giving us an aged and cantankerous Constantine, still flipping the bird to those in power! I love that series. (And take notes, future Hellblazer writers: Chas is still around. So no red-shirting him because you can't manage to write a poignant story without sacrificing a beloved member of the supporting cast).
Legion Lost #6. Love that series.
Preacher #66. The Saint of Killers arrives in Heaven. Slap holy leather, pardner!
Boy, only five comics. Good thing Gaithersburg had a great public library!

So, Grand Guignol comes down to the original Mist, which, for me, was a major turd in an otherwise fantastic series. It just felt like Robinson lost his mojo when Archie Goodwin died and a lot of what he had been building got tossed aside and rewritten into something less. Nash, the Mist's daughter, had been built up to be a real twisted little psycho and we were waiting for she and Jack to come together again and top the previous story; but, she ends up a lower tier threat in this storyline, to make her father more evil, which didn't really work. The Ragdoll had also been built up and tossed aside, barely even remembered to appear in this. Thankfully, Robinson would make up for it and end the series on some really high notes. Tom Strong continues to be great fun, mixing guest artist stories with the usual Chris Sprouse excellence. Loved everything about this series.

September 2000. Elections were coming up and I couldn't believe that the GOP would choose George W. Bush over John McCain. Which has nothing to do with my purchases on that month.
Cerebus #258, a rather tedious exploration of Dave Sim's thoughts on the Hemingways. Lovely art, though.
Hellblazer: Bad Blood #3, a limited series starring an old and cranky Joh Constantine. I loved that book. Should reread it, in fact.
Legion Lost #7, my must-read title in those days. Which, considering how few I bought, isn't saying much... but it's really a great Legion comic! Honest!
