October 2000
Only four months left to my buying comics off the shelf...
Cerebus #259. More lovely art and storytelling by Sim and Gerhardt, more obnoxious commentary on Hemingway, atheists and feminists by Sim alone.
Hellblazer #154. Azarello is not British, but he "gets" John Constantine.
Hellblazer: bad blood #4. Jamie Delano IS British, and nobody gets John Constantine like he does!
Legion Lost #8. More exciting Legion action, which shows that this concept doesn't need constant rebooting... just good writing!
There are lots more titles I should have tried back then, but I didn't know better at the time.

Let's see if I can remember what I got/recognize what I got from Mike's listings.
Avengers #34-I was still reading the Busiek/Perez stuff and was very active on the Avengers Mailing list at the time, so I am sure about this one and...

The rest I am a little iffy on but I believe I got the following:
Essential Iron Man Vol. 1
Maximum Security #1 & 2
Maximum Security Thor vs. Ego
Minor Miracles OGN
Promethea #11
Ring of the Nibelung: Valkyrie #3
Sandman Presents: Merv Pumkinhead: Agent of Dream

November 2000... no political comment, but I was pretty miffed. And there weren't even a ton of good comics to cheer me up!
Cerebus #260 : Dave Sim had gotten me interested in Oscar Wilde ten years earlier, and he did the same for Hemingway here. Nice art, intriguing progression... But man! Were Dave's editorial rants annoying.
Finder #20 : Beloved independent series that everyone should read. The book was brilliant all the way through and its author was amazingly generous. (When you ordered back issues, she'd send you a few pages of sketches and page roughs).
Hellblazer #155-156 : That particular storyline is pretty disturbing, but is a also a great masterclass on how to subvert expectations. We readers are convinced that John finds himself among insane hillbillies who practice human bondage and maybe cannibalism, but we find out that we're completely wrong. And alas, because all the male characters in this story insist on out-doing each other in the Tough Guys Who Act Mysterious And Won't Explain Anything department, there will be a traumatic denouement even though the misunderstanding could have been cleared up with a few words. (Which it is, actually, but after it's too late)..
I didn't read Azarello's run all the way to the end because circumstances got me to stop buying new comics, but what I read of it really impressed me.
Legion Lost #9 : More Legion goodness. Saturn Girl was really used to good effect after the reboot, and never more so than in this maxi-series.
