February 2002: this was just around the time I was first discovering online comics message boards and, because of that, beginning to feel some curiosity about what Marvel and DC were doing these (I mean those) days.
Avengers:Celestial Quest #6 - I bought this because it was Englehart returning to the Avengers but it was only OK, as far as I recall. In general, I would much prefer that Englehart would have written more independent comics rather than returning to Marvel characters.
Grip:The Strange World of Men #4 - I remember liking this Gilbert Hernandez miniseries but can't recall any details after all this time.
Howard the Duck #2 - Gerber was fine but I never took to Phil Winslade's style of art, which I feel bad about because apparently he was instrumental in convincing Gerber and Marvel to do this HtD miniseries.
Orion #23 - one of the best New Gods series done by anyone other than Kirby - in fact, i would say one of the very few worth looking at for any reason other than the artwork, which was also good. I didn't agree with evrything about Simonson's take on the character, but that was OK: I could see he was seriously trying to engage with the concept and that he had an appreciation for what Kirby had created, unlike just about every other writer I can think of who's written Kirby characters.
Promethea #19 - always my favourite of the ABC line
Sci-Spy #1 - I liked this, as I dod almost everything the Moench+Gulacy team ever came up with, but I didn't thnk Palmiotti's inks were a good fit for Gulacy's style - unless it was just that Gulacy's style had changed at this point.

February 2002
Angel #3 My wife made me an Angel fan by watching Buffy. Never cared for that show but I liked Angel and watched his series and buy most of the comics. I caught this one and then went back and bought the previous two issues.
Avengers:Celestial Quest #6 Of course, I bought this series. And I really enjoyed it, though I think the end was kind of a cop out/lame. But the bulk of the story I enjoyed. Really liked the art too. Jorge Santamaria seemed suited for the characters and settings.
Deadpool #63 I don't remember specifics about this issue. I think that I was buying it still out of habit, as it wasn't the same after Joe Kelly quit writing it.
Green Lantern #147 This was probably another habit buying series. Judd Winnick's issues were fair to sometimes good. But I did like the Eaglesham art.
Kemco Presents Batman:Dark Tomorrow #2 [Variant] I actually got this with the game I believe. And/or it was a free mail in thing with proof of purchase.
Oh My Goddess Part XI #6, 7 I stuck this out for just the end of part XI. Not because it wasn't good anymore but times were getting hard around this time and I couldn't justify comic spending. This is one series I also have thought about finishing, as I always enjoyed each issue.
Robin #99 Same as above. I think #100 was my last issue.
Ultimate Spider-Man #18, 19 This is actually the only title I kept buying through that time. $3 a month was justifiable. And I went almost to the end. Just by coincidence I have to give it up finally too, and my last issue was Bagley's last issue as well. I've pondered finishing it but when I look towards the end it seems like it was tied in to a lot Ultimate events, which is off putting.
X-Treme X-Men #10 I'll readily admit I bought this series from the start because of the Salvador Larocca art. The stories were really never that amazing. They weren't bad necessarily, but not real good either. So when Larocca left I stopped buying it.

March 2002:
Avengers/Defenders War TPB Avengers:Celestial Madonna TPB: this was my first time reading these two Avengers epics in their complete form. The original comics came out while I was taking a break from comics in the early 70s and though I had managed to find a few of the back-issues by 2002, these two stories were far from complete, so it was very gratifying to read them in 2002 in their entirety. Englehart was a favourite writer from Dr. Strange, and probably my favourite Avengers writer too, just from the Roxxon/Squadron Supreme story, which came out just as I was getting back into comics. The artwork in these earlier Engelhart Avengers stories was sometimes erratic and the colouring in the reprints was a huge turn-off, but still, great experience to read these classics for pretty much the first time.
Avengers:Celestial Quest #7: see Feb 2002 comment above: good enough, but I expected just a little more from Englehart - or perhaps needed more is was to get back into Marvel.
Howard the Duck #3: again, see above. I remember liking Gerber's writing here, as I almost always do, but the artwork didn't enhance it for me. But I think it was just a matter of personal taste (as it always is, of course, at least partially).
Grip: The Strange World of Men #5: a series I look forward to re-reading, because I don't recall much about it other than liking it at the time. Well, I don remember it being one of Gilbert's more fantastic miniseries in an SF vein, rather than his slice of life or Palomar or B-film-style things.
Orion #24 : again, see above. I can't emphasise enough how different this was and is to most post-Kirby New Gods series - or single issues or guest appearances or whatever. I'm so glad that it exists, not only for its own intrinsic merits but to show that it can be done: you can write and produce a New Gods comic that is true t the original concept and characters without slavishly reproducing Kirby's unfinished work. Maybe someone will try it with the Eternals some day.
Sci-Spy #2: this was a light-weight but fun miniseries. I'd still like to see how it might have looked with a different inker - apologies to Palmiotti and Gulacy, as I understand they're buddies. I winder if Moench and Gulacy will ever do anything together again - their track record is pretty strong.

Thank Kirby for Mike Mignola and Alan Moore, as they were my big saviors, this month. Hawkman and JSA were fine, though I wouldn't stick with those books for a whole lot longer. This was around the time I stopped getting Powers, but I'm not sure exactly which issue, but I think it was here. I had no idea what to expect from Amazing Screw on Head; but, Mignola was drawing, and I bought it and loved the hell out of it. Just pure oddball fun. One thing I didn't buy; but, did read was Spiderman's Tangled Web #14. The main reason was that the co-writer was Scott Levy, aka Scotty The Body Anthony, aka Scotty Flamingo, aka Johnny Polo, aka Raven, from ECW and (then) the WWE (he also worked for WCW, Global, Portland and a couple of other territories, before they went under, in the late 80s/early 90s). Levy was always a big comic book fan and wore some comic book t-shirts, in ECW. here, he and Brian Azzarello write a story about Crusher Hogan, the wrestler that Spider-Man fought in his debut issue. That was the actual name, given the character, long before Terry Bollea had entered wrestling, as Terry Boulder or Sterling Golden and well before he was renamed Hulk Hogan, by Vince McMahon Sr. The plot uses elements of the then-relatively recent Montreal Screwjob, where Bret Hart was double-crossed by Vince McMahon Jr, live, on PPV, when he thought the match was going to end in a run-in; but, McMahon had the ref ring the bell to signal Hart had submitted to Shawn Michaels. Hart went on a tirade, smashing monitors at the announce desk, after spitting on Vince, from the ring. He later decked McMahon, in the locker room. Levy and Azzarello use some of this to show Hogan being manipulated by a promoter, but getting back at him. It wasn't a bad story; but, it also wasn't one that was great enough for me to plunk down cash.
