American Century featured Chaykin's pseudo-homage to Bettie Page and Irving Klaw, as the main character gets mixed up with someone involved in shooting bondage photos, like Klaw's photos of Page and other models. The issue features a typical Chaykin smart-@$$ panel, where, during the shoot, the bound model's thoughts are on something like her grocery list or something equally mundane, cementing the idea that it was just a job to Bettie and her cohorts. Irving Klaw had to be the tamest, least offensive pornographer in the world; so, of course he was targeted by the government. The man actually made the models where an extra layer of lingerie, so nothing would show in the photos! Of course, you don't see that in The Notorious Bettie Page, much like you don't see much of anything that resembled the reality of Bettie's life or the work with the Klaws, not to mention the total fiction of her meeting John Willie. Bah, Hollywood! Thank Kirby for Chakin, Alan Moore and Mike Mignola providing me with reading material, as there wasn't much else. I don't think I stuck with JSA much longer and I ditched Hawkman not long after this issue. Moench & Gulacy return to Shang Chi and it's.....okay. The potty mouth was unnecessary and the plot needed work. It also felt padded, though it originated as a graphic novel project. Grendel was a welcome return and these were great, tales of Hunter Rose, done in black & white, with dashes of red thrown in where needed. I missed listing Battle of the Planets, for August. It was pretty decent and had the feel of Gatchaman; but, they never seemed to go anywhere with it, after teasing a few things. Not sure if sales were low or if they just lost the license, as it suddenly stopped. I know Sandy Frank's license for Gatchaman expired not too far down the road and we got the ADV Films releases, with the same Alex Ross artwork that graced the covers of the comics.

I somehow missed noting Ultimates #7, back in September. 8 was another nail in this thing, for me, as I didn't care for the implied incestuous relationship between Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. It was bad enough that it ripped off the Matrix, for the opening pages. Millar resorts too much to shock value, for my tastes and Ultimates displayed that nearly as much as The Authroity. Not been a fan of his work since. THUNDER Agents comes out in sweet Archive editions. I had high hopes for Killraven and Davis does a nice job, visually, but it just rehashed Don McGregor stories, without the style. Garth Ennis and Carlos Ezquerra turn their attention to the Spanish Civil War and the participation of the German Condor Legion, who carried out the bombing of Guernica. The Germans used Spain as a testing ground for their military strategies, and the deliberate attacks on civilians (not that that sort of thing had never happened before). Electropolis was a long wait for the missing final segments. The marketplace just didn't know a good series when it was presented to them. At least Dean Motter got to finish it.
