Enjoyed this set which is a take on 2 of my most favourite Marvel characters in one book. Cover price is completely unacceptable though, I waited until I could snag it for some 60% off.

I'm getting started on the 2016 Black Widow series. The covers are a bit MEH though...the run from 2014 was much better in that department.

Thanks to Comixology Unlimited, I'm reading Dynamo 5 by Jay Faerber & Mahmud Asrar. Captain Dynamo, the greatest super-hero in the world, was not the most faithful husband. Now he's dead and his family is trying to piece together their lives. As his enemies descend on his unprotected city, Captain Dynamo's widow rounds up his five illegitimate children, each of whom have inherited one of their father's super-powers. Can these total strangers come to terms with their powers, their father's legacy and each other as total chaos erupts? A couple of years back I'd posted, probably on The Previous Site That Shall Not Be Spoken, and Jay had replied, recommending Dynamo 5. Hadn't tried it until now on CU but I like it. Not great, but enjoyable. I like knock-off heroes cause things actually happen. The premise behind this, the Mighty Superhero, was in fact a flawed person not only dishonoring his marital vows, but many times. The widow finds his little black book in his secret lair and finds the bastard children he sired. We find that she was previously an investigative reporter, but that was really a cover for her being an agent of F.L.A.G. She brings the siblings together and hits em with some type of ray that activates the powers they got from their father. He had multiple powers, but they each got one. Now, related by blood but previously unknown to each other, and lead my his widow, work to defend his city. I'm on # 4. The fact they're step-siblings, hadn't previously known each other, or the widow, and come from different backgrounds, is a great idea. I'll be getting more of this. I read this the other day..first trade worth. I was inspired to get it when people were talking about it somewhere around here. Pretty cool premise overall. I don't love the SHIELD-like agency behind some of the stuff, but the characters themselves were really fun. Granted that the 'superheroes are flawed people' premise has gonna alot of run lately, I feel like this was a pretty good use if it.. I'll defnitely at least get the next trade.

Extremely hard to beat @ $ 6 / mo, and I think a tablet is perfect for it.

Ok, so I'm getting all caught up to the current issues of Valiant's most excellent titles. Honestly, there isn't one I haven't liked, but some I like better than others. I heard high praise of the 4001 series from last year, with Rai being the central hero. Read the 4001 mini and the one-shots (Bloodshot, X-O, Shadowman), all solid. Reading Rai and it's better than all of those at top level excellence. I'm constantly amazed at the stories Valiant puts out, and I have to say that although everyone says "great jumping on point", that's really only half true. I suppose you could jump on, but, it's a lot more satisfying having followed all the connections. Valiant does a one page recap to catch you up and it's probably the best I've read. Think James Cameron meets Jack Kirby and you'll get an idea of what this feels like. Another thing I love about the Rai series is that they build on the current Valiant U, everything makes sense, and yet they build their own direction. This is one of the best Valiant, and best storylines, I've ever read. DC and Marvel's mainstream titles, with all their changes, aren't as compelling to me anymore. Valiant hasn't rebooted / all-new all-different or whatever. Granted, they haven't been around as long, but, they've done a heck of a job with what they have. Marvel and DC rotate creators to prevent another Image situation, but Valiant gets their previous talent and they seem to produce their best here. Small but mighty, they've been here 4 years now. I'm buying all their titles, which they've maintained at a manageable 8 titles/month. In a nutshell, from Valiant's solicits for the 4001 A.D. mini (pics inserted by me) : One hundred years from today, Father – the benevolent artificial intelligence that governs the island nation of Japan – will gain sentience. To defend its borders, Father will take drastic action by launching Japan into space…where its people can thrive in isolation, away from the overpopulated and resource-deprived planet below. Over the centuries, as New Japan orbits our increasingly unstable world, it will become a model society – one built on peace, prosperity…and Father’s control. A thousand years from today, Father will create the first Rai, founding a lineage of technologically enhanced heroes engineered to defend New Japan and sworn to protect it from all enemies. For hundreds of years into the future, the Rai will single-handedly enforce New Japan’s justice well…and serve Father without question. Now, at the dawn of 4001 A.D., the latest Rai is about to inherit the dark truth behind the origin of his kind…and discover the sinister secret at the heart of Father’s existence. For New Japan to live, Earth must die…and as Rai challenges his former master for the first time in more than a millennium, the lone guardian of New Japan will be cast out of his own Father’s kingdom… Exiled from the only realm he’s ever known, Rai now walks the ravaged world of 4001 A.D. in search of forgotten heroes like himself…on a mission to collect the last surviving legends of a broken planet…and to forge a rebellion with the power to bring the most advanced civilization in history crashing back down to Earth. Earth must rise. Father must fall. Rai! Eternal Warrior! X-O Manowar! Bloodshot! Geomancer! Armstrong! And more! The war for the ultimate fate of humanity begins in 4001 A.D.!

Received in the mail Wednesday night before Thanksgiving the Jingle Belle TPB. What a wild comic it is. I have to feel for poor old Santa's misery at his daughter's antics. Truly though Santa would likely be the worst possible father to have and Jingle's psychotically sought after recognition and acknowledgement and subsequent failures make for great reading. The humor is spot on and the original black and white art so suits the naughtiness of this concept. Splendid holiday fun to ensue from the readings to come as i frolic along with Jingle this winter!!!

Last Friday I read the last issue of BPRD Hell on Earth. It actually came out the week before that, but my LCS didn't get a box of comics it was supposed to, so they didn't have it. I'm very glad they had it this week; I would have hated reading the last issue of one of my favorite titles digitally, or ordering a copy and waiting. Anyway, it was a excellent issue, and a great way to wrap up John Arcudi's long run on the book. I'm sad to see him leave BPRD, but I'm definitely excited to see the other books he will write next.

I so need to catch up on the BPRD stuff. I caught up on Hellboy this year, but I have oh so many volumes of BPRD and BPRD Hell on Earth (plus Abe Sapien, Lobster Johnson and Sir Edward Grey) to pick up and read. -M

I quit the B.P.R.D. book about 50 issues ago due to what I can only describe as a perceived Mignola overload. Now that it's complete, I'll have to make an effort to grab some trades.

Injection vol 2 - really, really good.
Atomic Robo And The Ring Of Fire - I'd love to say this is on par with the previous volumes of the series, over which I have gushed at great length. Unfortunately, it's really not. I don't know what's happened to Clevinger and Wegener, but I hope they're able to get back to the kind of quality, fun comics they've made in the past.

Injection is one of those series that is really good, and immersive inits internal mythology. It reads well in chunks, but I am going to have to read the whole thing again in one chunk when it's over. But it will be worth it. -M
