Italian here. I can confirm that Beppo was used as nickname for Giuseppe (but now it's less common). Other ones are "Beppe", " Peppe", "Pino" Interesting, in Croatia a common nickname for someone named Josip (the equivalent of Joseph/Giuseppe) was Pepo; another, probably taking a cue from the German-speaking world, was Sepo (like one of my uncles). As you said about Italy, though, neither are as common any more. In Australia, 'seppo' is a slightly-dated slang term for an American. It comes the tradition of rhyming slang we inherited from the cockneys, combined with the Australian of shortening words and putting '-o' on the end; i.e. 'Yank' = 'septic tank' = 'seppo'.

OK, "Pieface" is clearly offensive, but what about "Beppo"? For years as a kid I thought it was a made-up nonsense name, but it suddenly occurred to me that the inspiration for giving the super-monkey this Italian nickname for "Giuseppe" might have its roots in the cliché of the Italian organ grinder with his monkey. I certainly can't think of any other common associations of Italy with monkeys. I had no idea that Beppo was a nickname for Giuseppe. But there are very few people of Italian descent hereabouts. I am actually Italian and had no idea. People my grandparents new (my great grandparents were actually born in Italy) would use 'Joe' as a nickname for Giuseppe. Also, my grandfather would definitely substitute Giuseppe with Joseph freely, and vise versa.

In the south they probably used something like "Peppe".

Some say it stands for "P.P.", short for "Pater putativus", as Joseph was Jesus's putative dad... although that strikes me as a little too clever. But who knows?

Has anyone read the J. M. DeMatteis/Keith Giffen series, Hero Squared? Or the DeMatteis/Ploog Stardust Kid? Are they any good?

Their Justice League is one of my all-time favorite comics, so I ought to give Hero Squared a try.

Beppo is also the title of an amusing poem by Lord Byron about a guy who's supposed to be dead coming back to find his wife has remarried.

I'm working on a golden age Sandman cosplay and am running into all kinds of trouble with the mask. Out of a morbid curiosity, does the design (not necessarily the colours) match up to any kind of real world gas mask of the era? Or is it something the immensely talented Bert Christman (whose was shot down and killed while serving as a member of the Flying Tigers in WWII) came up with out of his own head?

It's a Christman design. Gas masks of that era were much more bulky. The mask the character wears in Sandman Mystery Theatre is more authentic but (in my opinion) nowhere near as cool.
Cei-U! I summon thg Golden Age glamor!

In mine, too.
That's why I'm doing a costume based on Christman's design, rather than the much easier Sandman Mystery Theatre version.

This was a British model, that would be relatively close.... The filter is where the comic kind of loses reality, aside from the stylization. Gas masks require filters to remove the impurities to make air breathable, in a gas attack. My cousin had a later era one, they got from somewhere (military surplus or something) which had twin hoses that came out of the mask, to a filter cylinder, which would hang behind your neck and shoulders. They even had them for horses!
