I'm pretty sure at the moment true 4K resolution content is streaming only and pay-per-play through Sony. That will probably change, but maybe not. I can see it's the direction they want to go though. It all depends on how well 4K catches on. If it's an instant hit, no reason to change the delivery method. If people are happy with lower resolution DVD's then you have to make that 4K easier to get. And physical media is currently easier for a lot of people with slow internet.

I think streaming will be the standard for all media in ten years time. No more replacing the VHS with DVD, the DVD with Bluray, the Blyray with whatever comes next. How will media producers maintain profit levels if they can't get consumers to re-buy the same content over and over again? ...streaming is bad for big business -M i dont think streaming is necessarily bad for business as long as you change the format they are streamed once in a while. really a digital trade should have a writers / artists video commentary, annotations, you should be able to see every page made up from pencils to inks to colours at the press of a button, editors recollections etc. there is massive scope to run wild with digital which the present file formats dont allow. Pdfs are awesome for printing stuff at a printer but they are very much a bodge of sorts for digital comics. Not sure about cbrs as I've never used them but i'm going to assume they are built around the display of printed material on a screen rather than a dedicated digital comics format (with all the bells and whistles a digital viewer can potentially provide)

I've never cared for supplementary content. I'd always pick the lower price over the more deluxe option. Unless it was one of my absolute favorites. Not that I've actually ever bought a deluxe version of a DVD, but I can imagine I could be convinced to do so, only in rare instances though.
I actually think supplementary material would be annoying if it had to be downloaded along with the comic I wanted to read.

And as we have been using .rar files for over 20 years now, I think it'll still be readable in the foreseeable future. The only formats that should be troublesome are formats that require copyrighted codecs (see Windows 8 no longer playing DVD movies)

Say you could go into the settings and choose the ethnic origin of a character. For 90% of big two characters it probably doesnt make a scrap of difference to the actual story so at the click of a button you could have asian, african, or european spiderman fighting dr octopus. without meaning to sound crass, it can be just a simple palette swop on skin tones and layer swop on hairstyles, which can be done today with so much stuff coloured in layers on photoshop. There is the option to tailor the story to reflect oneself if one wishes. Or, it might be a bit naff, but a choose your own adventure style mini series or just the ending to a series. I agree with dizzy in the short to medium term the current file formats themselves are going to pretty safe but they look pretty primitive compared to what the tablet/phone/computer has the power to do and with that comes a kind of built in redundancy over the mid to long term.

I just kind of look at it like this. Sound effects and animations are completely unnecessary. If I wanted to watch a cartoon on my tablet there's always the Hulu+ app. My ebook reader is fine with presenting plain old text on my screen, not too different from how we've been viewing text for thousands of years. I don't see why new technology has to change an old medium. 3D technology exists and I am not a huge fan of it. Good old 2D movies work for me. I like a good sound system and nice high resolution playback, but no need for the goggles in my opinion.

Comixology now offers DRM-free backups from certain publishers in .cbz or .pdf format.
What are the differences between the two ? The big thing I want is to be able to print or crop images. Does either offer an edge over the other ?

Have no problem exporting pages to jpeg format without losing quality...and any good graphics package with crop, resize etc can do the rest.

Does either offer an edge over the other ? PDF is probably better printable as that's the main reason for PDF. CBZ is just a zip-archive of various images. If you open it, it'll contain probably some image files (JPG/GIF etc.) and possibly a text file. Neither really has big advantages or disadvantages for reading I'd say. CBZ probably has a few advantages when it comes to editing or if you want a scan of a single page (just extract the right image from the file), so for your purposes CBZ'd be better.

Just saw this on facebook. No idea if the quote is accurate, but it made for a good laugh:

I could see Stan saying that, so apocryphal or not I'm going to pretend its true.
