Bill Russell was a legendary player and a legendary man. His activism was as important as his accomplishments on the court.
Nichelle Nichols was simply a legend, she was a shining beacon of hope and possibility for an entire generation.

21-0 in elimination games. It doesn't get any better than that. Only 21 ? Ha! Love it!

I should have been clearer in my post about Bill Russell's record of 21-0. He posted that in winner-take-all games. (Celts did lose elimination games twice during Russell's reign, in 1957 and 1967.) And actually he went 22 (!) when in winner-take-all games.
In his two college championship runs in 1955 and '56, the Dons of the University of San Francisco went 5-0 both times.
Then, in the '56 Olympics, the US squad defeated the Russians in the final (after going 7-0 in the other rounds).
In ten NBA finals, the Celtics went 10-0 in Games 7's.
And, the one I forgot came in 1966, when the Celtics won the fifth game in the best-of-5 series with the Cincinnati Royals.
22 total.
I apologize to Mr. Russell.

Losing Nichols is a heavy blow. Definitely an icon, especially for the black community. At least she lived a long life, and got to inspire so many through just one role on television.

Bill Russell was before my sports awareness age; but, I used to see him as a commentator on ABC Sports programming, like The Superstars.
Nichele Nichols is sad, like losing a favorite grandmother. She was such a wonderful person and despite being undervalued as a performer and character, her presence in Star Trek gave a ton of inspiration to people that the future could be better than the present. She also had a beautiful singing voice, which she got to show off a couple of times in the show and Star Trek 5.
I also saw her in the movie The Adv of Captain Zoom in Outer Space, about a 50s tv sci-fi actor who gets pulled to an actual alien planet and has to become a real hero, Nichelle had a small; but important role in it and got to play some comedy and was a hoot. Best thing about the film (which I think was a pilot, shown in the same showcase that launched Tekwar, Hercules and a couple of others).
Farewell Star Freedom (Nyota Uhura).

Everyone on this forum is losing their heroes.
I've always been quite selective and wary in using the term "hero". I could count mine on one hand, and they're all gone... the last one passing in 2020.

Better I should ask yours. I was the one who forgot about that fifth game against the Hawks. 😔 Curse you, old age!

Russell was head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics when I was in junior high, endearing him to an entire generation of Northwest basketball fans. He will be missed.
Cei-U! I summon the melancholy-tinged nostalgia!

RIP character actor Clu Gulager. He was all over tv from the 50s through the 70s, bunch of movies, too. He was a regular n The Viginian, had guest roles on Have Gun, Will Travel, Alfred Hitchcock Hour, The Untouchables, Hawaii 5-), Ironside, Get Christie Love!, McCloud, The Fall Guy, Magnum PI....... Movies included The Killers, The Last Picture Show, McQ, The Other Side of Midnight, A Force of One, Return of the Living Dead, Nightmare on Elm Street 2, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. He was originally from Oklahoma and had a laconic drawl that accentuated many parts. He served in the USMC, from 1946-48, graduated from Baylor Univ and studied acting in Paris. He was married to actress Miriam Byrd-Nethery, until her death, in 2003. He was a cousin of Will Rogers and was part Cherokee, as his stage name, Clue, was a Cherokee nickname, given to him by his father, because clu-clu birds (martins) were nest on their house, when he was born (his birth name was William). Great actor who seemed to turn up in everything.

I was just a little guy, but I loved him as Billy the Kid in a short-lived TV show called “The Tall Man,” with Barry Sullivan as Pat Garrett. In this take, the two worked as uneasy allies. I remember that Billy always referred to Garrett as “Patrick.”

Clu Gulager was one of those characters actors I would not have been able to put a name to, but he did have a great career. I most remember him as Jesse's father in Nightmare on Elm Street 2.
