You all are really still arguing about Castro?? So, let's take a count: how may for "rest in peace", and how many for "roast in peace"? That is how you are really going to know which side wins. What if there's an electoral college?

Unbelievable. I think I'm about done with this discussion. I'll just end up saying something regrettable. Thing I wish I would have said in the politics thread. *sigh* At least you were able to stop yourself before you ruined friendships.

What if there's an electoral college? Not for this. No. This is strictly a "popular vote" thing. And there's no green party/third party/libertarian/etc. There is only "Roast" or "Rest" in peace. No neutral. I'm going for "rest", only because I really have no claim in this. He's gone, and whether that is good or bad, I am removed from any emotional investment.

I guess so. Some people love their tyrants so badly they get offended by those toasting marshmallows by the funeral pyre. I can't find a single post expressing love for Castro or any other tyrant. But that's fine. Marshmallows can be toasted over a burning straw man too. Here's a nice article from the Guardian, with Cubans chiming in. Some of them are very happy. Some are sad. Some are neutral. Some condemn the tyrant. Some praise the nation builder. Some do both at the same time. That's the kind of reaction I would expect when an important political figure with an ambiguous legacy passes away.

That's not a mark of love, that's a statement of historical fact. It's like saying "Stalin is a major reason Hitler was finally defeated". Dramatically improving the general standard of living for the poorest of your people does not mean you can't also jail people for their opinions, shoot them for trying to leave the country or having Granma tell impossibly grand tales about you. It just means you can do good things in certain fields and bad ones in the other.

Former USC star and Jet/Chief Joe McKnight shot and killed over an argument at a traffic stop He was a Jet during QB Mark Sanchez's tenure with the team, right? His name rings a bell. I actually support the Jets, but I've never been such a big fan that I could recite all the player's names. But I do recognise McKnight's name.

Yeah He was a star in HS, went to USC but never lived up to the Reggie Bush comparisons, and the Jets drafted him in the 4th round. Never really did much with the Jets but he was a decent kick returner. Last I heard he was playing in the CFL. Really a senseless way to die. By all accounts he was a good, kind hearted kid.

Andrew Sachs, who played manuel on Fawlty Towers has passed away. he was actually German and his family fled the Nazis and came to England, where he grew up. Ton of tributes from John Cleese and Connie Booth, creators and stars of the series.
