Sorry about derailing the thread with my rants. But thanks to those that posted their thoughts and research.
More specifically I live in Norman, OK and have been somewhere in OK since 2000. I was born in Hibbing, MN but grew up in St. Louis, MO which has been the only place that's felt like home.

Currently living in Sherbrooke, Canada. Small university town an hour and a half east of Montreal and twenty minutes north of Maine. There is a definite dearth of saltwater around here. (not to mention comics). I'll send you some saltwater Ben (I'm basically surrounded by it out here) if you'll send me some Montreal bagels next time you hit the city. That would be much appreciated! Halifax is a town my wife and I definitely considered: Dalhousie university has some cool research programs, and I miss the sea. Too bad we ended up in Montreal for a while (despite the admittedly great bagels!) Sherbrooke came later, for professional reasons. |

I don't think fifty grand starting wage is unreasonable for an educator. I know of jobs that pay more after eight weeks vocational school. I wasn't saying it was unreasonable.The point I was trying to make was during the 60s,70s and 80s you always heard about how we underpay teachers,the good ones wind up leaving and thats why the educational system is failing.In NY for the last 25 years massive amount of money went to education,teachers salaries are now excellent (don't forget between summer,recesses and all the holidays they only work 8 months of the year) investments made in school infrastructure ,afterschool classes,computers etc.MRP made some excellant points why an infusion of money does not automatically mean better education. However you will still hear the politicians and the teachers union say we need more.They use children to make the public feel guilty.They have more concern about growing their power and beaurocracy then children's needs Eh, depends on what you think is an "excellent" wage. I think Americans have gotten used to earning peanuts, and now we think a barely livable wage is something special. When six figure incomes are considered middle class, I wouldn't think half that is all that excellent. It's below the national median, and considering how few people actually graduate college and how many work in the service industry, that's pretty bad. As far as taxes and politics go, just imagine what we could afford if that 25% of corporations that don't pay taxes actually did pay taxes. |

You know, I was reading the third appearance of Doctor Strange the other day (in my newly acquired Marvel Masterworks: Doctor Strange Vol. 1, natch  ) and Strange is summoned to help an old friend in London...who happens to live in a castle. In London. That's right, a private castle. In London! Some brilliant Silver Age writing there from Stan Lee. *Sigh* I bet Stan Lee's London is a lot more fun than the real thing. |
