I like Elasti-Girl's costume, and I love Hawk's costume. I'm not so keen on Beautiful Dreamer's, though I like the hippie name. I do sorta like her costume in your first image, but not so much in the other images.

Hmm, well, DC did do the socially relevant thing as early as 1970 in Green Lantern/Green Arrow, but that was rather a departure from the norm for DC. Yes, I'd agree that Marvel really took the lead with the more mature themes, generally. I think you have to look at War and Horror Comics more than any other genre for this discussion because they are generally the darkest/heaviest/most "mature" through the classic eras. . '50s - Marvel publishes Battlefield and Battlefront and other true-to-life-ish Kurtzman inspired war books. Dc (as far as I know) doesn't publish anything quite so dark. Even after the code gutted Marvel's war and horror lines, they're still putting out these short Ditko psychological thrillers. Advantage: Marvel.'60s - Sgt. Rock is darker and more 'relevant' than Sgt. Fury - lots of weighty themes and greater ethnic diversity earlier, with Jackie Johnson and Johnny Cloud. The new, revamped-into-EC-style House of Mystery debuts in '68. (Note: The Kubert Enemy Ace is still my favorite DC series of all time.) Advantage: DC. '70s - DC has a greater variety of non superhero-romance-teen humor comics, but Marvel has it's magazine line. Slight Advantage: Marvel. '80s - Thriller, Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, Camelot 3000, Watchmen.... vs. Epic comics. Advantage: Draw.I'm assuming you never read all the stuff Marvel UK published in the 80s, then, much of it by people like Alan Moore and Jamie Delano? From my POV, that gives them the edge. But I know that, aside from Moore's wonderfully dark Captain Britain, most of it was never reprinted in the US.

Hawk and Dove's costumes are another example of great silver age costumes. Hawk's cape is unique and his and Dove's looks remind me a bit of Battle of the Planets. The red evokes anger and agreesion, while Dove's blue evokes calm and peace. Great dynamic between the brothers, a dynamic I believe DC did not take full advantage of. Hawk's look is a testament to great design as it is still being used (with a few tweaks) nearly 50 years later. Hawk is one of my favourite DC characters, though I never really developed an appreciation for him until the 80s, oddly enough, after the original Dove died.

I liked C.B. a lot but it was a lot more conventional/traditional than his stuff-that-was-published-in-America-through-DC or Eclipse. (I would really like to see a Best of Marvel UK Collection, and given the slew of reprints out of Marvel recently I'm not sure it's impossible.)

Captain Britain was some of Moore's earliest work, which might account for that-though at around the same time, he was doing some much more edgy stuff for Warrior and 2000 AD, so maybe it was simply what was required by Marvel. He also did some very odd Star Wars and Doctor Who stuff for them, amongst other things, and a wonderful spoof of Frank Miller's Daredevil.

I like the Speedy costume. I love the red & yellow color combination, and the costume is otherwise (except the boots) very much like his mentor's, Green Lantern.
