What's a Comic Book Challenge?- monthly threads to encourage more reading and discussion - a way to figure out "what do I read next?" - motivation to try different genres - motivation to keep reading and make progress on our unread piles - a place to get recommendations How does it work?- we pick a genre (or company, or title, or whatever) for a month - we post in this thread and talk about what we plan to read and read throughout the month - you could keep a spoilered list in one post and update it all month, or post as you read - in theory the lists could be kept in a separate thread to allow for fancier formatting while avoiding clutter What makes it a "challenge"?- well, unofficially, the goal is to read 100 comics a month, but that isn't stressed - the group discussion will challenge and encourage you to read more (the main goal of most participants I imagine) Who can participate?- anyone and everyone! - you don't have to list your reading or even post at all to participate, but what's the fun in that? - quasi-technically, anyone on the planet who reads a qualifying book for the month is a participant, whether they know it or not When does it start and end?- it begins at dusk the night before the 1st of the month, and ends at dawn the following 1st - this bonus time allows for possible "double counting" cross-Challenge content - content eligible for both Challenges has the bonus of being able to be counted for all 24 hours of the last/first days of the month for both Challenges Who wins?- there are no losers, the person who reads one page a month is equal to the person who reads 20 books a day

I definitely plan on starting a few horror series in Oct. I have American Vampire, Rachel Rising and Hellblazer in my to read pile. Will probably add a Junji Ito manga as well. Just need to decide between Uzumaki and Gyo.

If you've read neither before, start with Uzumaki as it is IMHO better constructed.

I have some recently purchased horror related single issues coming in the mail. I will read them sporadically throughout the month and review them here

Just need to decide between Uzumaki and Gyo. American Vampire is pretty awesome. I just read the first volume of Rachel Rising recently (after sampling the first issue through the Halloween Comifest giveaway last year) and quite liked it. I need to pick up more volumes at some point. I have the first volume of American Vampire sitting on the shelf unread, so I may check that out in Oct, plus a lot of random horror stuff unread I can check out. I have also been itching to do a reread through the Pasko Swamp Thing the preceded Moore and the Moore run and some classic Wein/Wrightson swampy stuff, so those may get some attention in Oct as well. -M

Rachel Rising is excellent, slow but excellent. I also have to agree that American Vampire is good too, glad I didn't get too far into it yet, save that sucker for next month.

Lining up some manga/horror and slice-of-life/horror to read tomorrow for double credit.
This was a pretty lost month for me, barely read anything.
But with horror being my favorite genre, I'm hoping to avoid watching a crazy amount of films next month (for a change) and concentrate my free time on reading. Have a probably crazy goal of 300 books, but 100 is more likely. I have some old and new Creepy and Eerie loaded in my Dark Horse app, and a nice hodge podge of stuff on Comixology to go along with a pile of old House of Mystery and Unexpected floppies.
And maybe this year I'll actually read that Man-Thing Omnibus that I barely touched last year.

I was gonna order some Creepy and EErie volumes through interlibrary loan last month, but Terry and the Pirates was really dense so that didn't happen. Maybe this month.
I've also never read Tomb of Dracula all the way through in order. That would be a good 'un.
And I'd like to reread Nocturnals.
Does "Monster" by the guy who wrote Pluto and 20th Century Boys count as horror? I got that out of the library.

I'm hoping to read one or more of:
Alan Moore's Neonomicon Garth Ennis's Caliban Gillen & McKelvie's The Wicked + the Divine Spencer & Gane's The Vinyl Underground Max Ernst's Une Semaine de Bonté
Not sure how horror-related some of those are. Realistically, I'll be lucky to get through more than one or two of them. I have a few horror (or close enough) books lined up as well for October but I'll save that list for the books thread on the community board.

I reread the first volume of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing this month and will continue it. I was just thinking about re-reading his run yesterday. I might, but my to read piles this month are already huge. Coincidentally, just ten minutes ago I opened a new package from Amazon. It's the deluxe hardcover collection of the new Scott Snyder run. I don't think I've read an issue yet, despite Swampy being my lifelong favorite character, so I think I'll open this up tonight.

I think I can get in on this. I have a healthy stack of Warren mags and Death Rattle comics I haven't read yet. A few horror mags too that I've been buying and not reading, this would be the perfect opportunity to get caught up on those.

I think I have at least one issue somewhere.

My LCS had two collections of Epic's Clive Barker's Hellraiser on sale, and I picked them on the strength of the artists involved (like John Bolton, Kent Williams, etc). The stories get a bit formulaic-- there's a person (or people) doing horrible things, then the cenobites show at the end-- but the art is gruesome in all the right ways. I even ordered a copy of the Epic Tapping the Vein anthology because it involved so many of the same creators.
I'll probably re-read David Hine's Strange Embrace sometime this month, too. That's probably my favorite horror comic. So psychologically intense and twisted, but not gory in any way.
