So I just heard that Deadpool is going to be the newest addition to the team...WTF?
I can't even begin to put into words how out of place this seems.
I know Deadpool has been more on the straight and narrow in recent years (which is totally lame IMO, he was always at his best and most interesting as the smartass, psychotic anti-hero), but this is just ridiculous to me.
Guys like Punisher and Deadpool are two of my all-time favorites...but they just don't belong in The Avengers.
I know most of you guys read a helluva lot more modern age stuff than I do...thoughts?

It's really weird that they put Deadpool in such a prominent position when Marvel has previously tried to minimize characters who they don't have the movie rights to.
Maybe Ike finally figured out that a high tide raises all ships?

As much as I dislike it, I think Marvel is forced to do this given that fans don't support team books that's not Avengers or X-Men related any longer. Marvel, of course, is partially to blame for this given their marketing strategies.

It's really weird that they put Deadpool in such a prominent position when Marvel has previously tried to minimize characters who they don't have the movie rights to. Maybe Ike finally figured out that a high tide raises all ships? That gets bandied about a lot on line but I haven't really seen it in practice. I mean, Wolverine and the X-Men aren't owned by Disney and yet they are still prominent in the comics, and even before Sony and Disney came together Spider-Man was still everywhere. |

I'm surprised he didn't carry an array of stupid stuff that he scavenged out of dumpsters in a grocery cart when going into battle. but at least he could fold up his cardboard D-cave and take it with him so he always had an hq handy.... D-Man make sthe stick figure super-heroes I made up when I was 6 look good... -M |

Deadpool sells comics. The trades sell very well. Deadpool is a pretty polarizing character but I think his actual comics have been pretty enjoyable and would say Cable & Deadpool is one of the better newer Marvel series I read since getting back into comics. I'd think the character works best when left in his own corner to get weird and just do his thing.
For the most part you are better off ignoring most Marvel comics post 1990 for any real continuity. That stuff is long out the window. Every now and then a creator finds a kernel of corn and does some stuff that jives with the older comics, but it's totally hit and miss now (mostly miss).

Agree with the bold part, if only because if they leave him in his own corner, he won't show up in the books that I read, which is for the best. When Deadpool was first introduced, I liked the concept and character, but once they turned him into "Bugs Bunny as an assassin", the shine came off that apple real quick. |

They can't really afford to shun Wolverine, the X-Men or Spider-Man because they form the backbone of the Marvel universe and of course they have events to coincide with their movie releases. Likewise, Deadpool is a huge seller as well. But it's very strange that they're sticking him in the Avengers, which is not only the most high profile position a Marvel character can get in the comics but is also something that is extremely unlikely to happen in the movies. |
