I'm sorry to interrupt a conversation between two old curmudgeons...but I seriously need another PunisherMAX fix, and fast.
I love the anti-hero, no nonsense shit, plus it has F-words and he shoots scum.

Only worked for me when Bill Everett wrote him - or (to a much lesser extent) his part-time roomie, Roy Thomas. The Lee/Kirby version of Namor is a completely new interpretation of the character that basically craps all over everything Everett was doing. Stan wrote a great and HILARIOUS Namor in Tales to Astonish. I didn't always much care for how he treated Dorma, but for Namor, he was written wonderfully by Stan during Tales to Astonish. He was a typical silver age Stan Lee character, but only with a bit more ego (okay, LOTS more ego). Super dramatic and hilarious. I generally love Stan, but that didn't do much for me. Namor was such a D-Bag! I like cocky Namor, but arrogant Namor is just too much! And as much as I love Gene Colan, "underwater monsters" was probably the worse possible strip for the king of Gothic/Noir to draw.. (I haven't read the whole TTA series, though. I'll try to finish it soon!)

The only time I liked him was when he showed up as a foil for Spider-man in Spidey's books.

GUYS. I found the Legion run that Pharozonk recommended! And then I found the others I got out of the 25 cent bin. Gerry Conway wrote these, #277 and #278. Art by Jimmy Janes. And then I have three written by Roy Thomas #279, 280 and 281. Art was done by Jimmy Janes except for #281 which was done by Steve Ditko. You try and tell me not to read #279. We'll see if I listen. HE IS HOLDING A FACE IN HIS HANDS. I have to. And then Cosmic Boy Those colors are so awesome. So vibrant. Best.

And they all smell so fantastic, just so you know. I fanned my face with them before I put them away. And I know you are not judging me.

He was a guest-star in Spidey #161 and #162 and then in #174 and #175, and those are all solid enjoyable comic books. Too bad it couldn't last. There. I said it. A reminder of happier days:

I have at least two or three somethings with Nightcrawler and Spider-man. Because Nightcrawler. <3

They're not as great as the Levitz issues that preceded or followed them, but they're definitely enjoyable in a silly 80's comic sort of way. I can't wait to hear what you think of them. Roy Thomas was actually surprised when I asked him to sign that issue with Mon-El holding the face. He said "Oh...one of my Legion issues!". He laughed for a moment before signing them.

You try and tell me not to read #279. We'll see if I listen. HE IS HOLDING A FACE IN HIS HANDS. I have to. I would never try to tell you not to read it, even if your logic wasn't already totally unassailable. You seem to have missed any issue of the Legion of Super-Heroes that I've ever read. I had been reading comics for a while and was way into my teens when I started reading the Legion about #284 or #285, the last few Pat Broderick issues. So I was there when Keith Giffen started doing the art. And I read LSH up to the cool storyline with the Legion of Super-Villains all vowing to kill a Legionnaire! That adventure ended with the death of Karate Kid and I only read it for a short time after that. Then in the mid-1990s, I read it when the continuity was going back and forth between Legionnaires and the Legion of Super-Heroes. I read that for five or six years, maybe more. And then I stopped again until the New 52 when I read the new Legion reboot for a year and a half. The best place to start wit thhe Legion is undoubtedly the Legion Archives. Because you can read things like this: Full confession: I've never actually read this one. But I want to!

He was okay back then but that outfit was corny as hell. Would you believe I bought the Punisher's first appearance for 12 and a half cents? In 1975 (maybe early 1976) my dad took me to a used book store where he would trade in all his mystery novels (Dell Shannon, Dick Francis, John D. MacDonald, stuff like that) and he said he thought the lady who ran the place (her name was Alma and she was at least 80 years old and totally adorable!) sometimes had a few comics in a box behind the counter. So I asked her and she pulled out a wooden box about four inches deep and it had a few dozen beat-up comics, mostly Marvels from 1971 to 1975. Some of them were really beat-up. They were two for a quarter and I bought maybe two dollars worth. I got stuff like Spider-Man #149 (which was actually in pretty good shape. I remembered seeing in a spinner rack a few months previously), Spider-Man #111, #114, #124, #127, #131 ... and #129, the first appearance of the Punisher (and also the Jackal). I still have most of them, including the #129. It's a little beat-up but I bet it would grade at 3.0 on the CGC scale.

And would you believe if someone wants to buy a copy today, in reasonably high-grade, they have to spend about 5,000 times as much ($625). And when they do, they might get screwed cuz someone cut out the stamp
