Haven't read any Atom comics but I remember them as featuring a lot of really good covers in the 60s from artists like Gil Kane. The interiors were just as good! The whole package just worked for me - The combination of Kane's propulsive dynamism and Fox's weird sensahumor made the Atom about the best comic ever for funny visual gags. (Something that current writers and artists couldn't pull of if their lives depended on it, he curmungeonally muttered.*) * Except for Garth Ennis. Repti, this is a great insight about those wonderful SA Atom stories. It made me think about how much any of the many shtiks and gags from those Fox-Kane Atom stories might have influenced the Ant-Man movie. I haven't seen it, but the mood is obviously much lighter than the Ant-Man stories from Tales to Astonish ever were. I'm probably barking up the wrong tree about the moviemakers b/c the Silver Age was before their time and they brought a post-modern take on super-heroes to the film, but it's worth a thought.

I never really liked the Nick Fury Character. All the stories that he's been in have never resonated with me. Not his appearances in Avengers, FF , Captain America or Iron Man.
I realize this might be Blasphemous to some.
I said it.

I just saw Ant-Man (it took me a while. I was mad he got a movie before the Atom) and I was wondering the same thing. Visually it was a lot more Kane than Kirby and... I actually had to look up who else drew Ant-man... Ayers. Definitely one of my favorites of the current crop of superhero flicks.

I liked Rick Jones from the beginning from the Hulk to Cap America to Captain Marvel and I heard he was in Rom as well. I thought I knew you, man, but this is just heartbreaking. Rick Jones is a grade-A assclown, no matter who's writing him or which main hero he's paired up with. He's not cool, he's not hip, and he's not with it. I've said it before, and there, I said it again.

I didn't really care for Nick Fury either...until that little nugget.

While I on the other hand would rank Steranko's Nick Fury run as one of the top 5 Silver Age Marvel runs and his portrayal there making him a lot more interesting character than a lot of the capes and masks running around the pages of Marvel books at the time. As for Rick Jones, have he and Snapper Carr ever been seen ion the same place? I think he was a double agent appearing in both universes to make the reader feel cool and better about themselves because while they may not be as cool as Batman or Captain America, at least they knew they were cooler than Snapper Jones or Rick Carr. -M

-M It's quite the insult to compare Snapper Carr to Rick Jones. Carr is really a forgettable very minor part of the JLA history. Rick Jones SAVED THE WORLDDDDDDDDDDDD !

Nobody who has ever read an early issue of JLA will forget Snapper. He is one of the least forgetable things about the Justice League. I am not saying this is a good thing. And Snapper saved the world in his very first appearance. How many issues did it take Rick to do the same thing? Was it 96 or 97?

It was like a sleeping pill. None of the characters had personality , so if Snapper saved THAT world, I'm mad at him.

Snapper did! That's why he stood out in a way that Rick Jones just didn't - the Avengers were all fighting for screen time!
I'm a pretty huge fan of the Fox/Sekowsky JLA stuff - I'm rereading JLA from the beginning right now. I like the density and intricacy of the plots compared to what Marvel/everyone else was doing and I think Fox/Schwartz were great visual writers - even if Sekowsky wasn't a particularly great superhero team book artist - and it's just cool to me how they were trying to teach their kid audience science.
But, yeah, if you were raised on Claremont - or even Stan Lee - emotastic "I'm going to talk about my feeeeeeeeeeeeliings for 17 pages" superheroes I can see how it's gonna take some adjustment.

That formula served to make them #1 from the late 60's onward. In my opinion , when you compare any team book to the first 50 or so issues of Avengers or Fantastic Four, you're just embarrassing the other book.

I'd agree that FF was a stronger book overall, although Justice League was better in quite a few respects. The plots were so much tighter. For every Galactus Trilogystory or Battle of the Baxter Bulding in FF you'd have a filler issue with the Sandman or something like the first Inhumans story where the plot just fizzled into nothing.
But Avengers.. I will defend issues 1-10 and 16-24 to the death, but some of that stuff right before Buscema started on the book was just tired going-through-the-Marvel-style-motions. While JLA was having epic battles between the Spectre and the Anti-Matter Man while Earth One is gonna crash into Earth Two Goliath was whining about being stuck at ten feet for eight pages in every...freaking... issue.
Honestly, I think Avengers probably peaked right after issue 50, terrible X-men crossover aside. Avengers 52, 57 and 58 are my absolute favorites.

I knew it! I Knew there was another Rick Jones fan out there!!!! I thought I was the only one! Don't care what the naysayers say. I like Rick Jones. There. I said it. AGAIN. I like Rick, not nearly as much as I like Snapper Carr, but he's OK.
