For me, Cap and Wasp always have to be on the team. Iron Man, Thor and Hank Pym (in whatever incarnation) should be there, but I can handle occasional absences. A few members who aren't essential, but who I really like as members (telling you about when I started reading Avengers regularly) are: Vision, Ms. Marvel/Capt. Marvel (Carol Danvers), Wonder Man, Beast and Scarlet Witch.
As for the X-men, I generally agree with Roquefort Raider about Cyclops; to me, he's the heart and soul of the team.

I seem to remember a decent storyline revolving around Rage in the Avengers pages. I think his Grandmother was killed by some gang members and it was revealed that he was really Shazam Captain Marvel. Hee Hee.

Justice League: I want 3-4 of the "big 7" present. Avengers: At least 2 of the "big 3". JSA: Flash, GL & Hawkman. Defenders: Dr Strange, Hulk & Namor. Invaders: Cap, Torch & Namor. Titans: I want 3 of the original 5.

I think it was then they revealed he was like 13... then Night Thrasher adopted him sometime after.

It could be Robin, Kid Flash & Wonder Girl. Or Robin, Speedy & Aqualad. Same with Avengers & JLA.

It matters because Speedy and Aqualad are lame.

It matters because Speedy and Aqualad are lame. One of the things I liked about Winick's Outsiders series was the "bond" between Nightwing & Arsenal as non powered heroes that were former sidekicks.

I always felt that he was the least of the Titans along with Aqualad. Wolfman didn't really include them in his run with Perez for a reason.

After all Nightwing has been Batman a few times. Wally has been the Flash for an extended period of time. And Donna was Wonder Woman for a short time. But Roy never stepped into the role of Green Arrow & Garth never took over as Aquaman.

I felt that the reason they were left out was that Speedy was a duplicate of Robin and to utilize Aqualad, you had to have bits of story that involve the sea.

However I have a different opinion about Speedy. After the O'Neil/Adams Speedy drug addiction story it seemed like Speedy was "damaged goods" and no one wanted to write him. Plus he didn't "grow" like Robin did into his own persona until decades later (& even then he was treated poorly by writers at times). At first Green Arrow & Speedy were Batman & Robin as archers but by the 70's that was gone as O'Neil & Adams revitalized Green Arrow & Grell took that even further.
