The church backpeddling on it's firmly held beliefs has always been interesting. When I was a member, caffeine was a big "no-no" and Postum was next to godliness

Oh no, another closed thread in 3...2...1... You think?? Everyone seems to be on very good behavior from what I can tell unless I missed something. Who are those guys in the boots coming here? Is that a giant hook? At the risk of waking up in trouble here tomorrow some opinions are best left unsaid.

Leaving aside the specifics of Card's statements and professed beliefs, in recent years, I echo the above sentiments that people do change; and, sometimes, for the worse. Aging can bring it on and specific life experiences can cause people to seem to regress in their morals and beliefs. People become disillusioned and disheartened and it can take a very bitter turn, leading to more negative behavior. There are tons of examples. There can also be other factors, such as mental health. A lot of internet culture seems to feed on elements that have negative effects on the psyche. As much as it can bring together, it can isolate people and incubate negative aspects of their personality.
People can change greatly. How many of the Baby Boomers of the 60s, who marched for peace and talked about making a better world and spouted ideals about building communities then grew on the have jobs and families and bills and mortgages and life setbacks and job pressures and whatever and soon were supporting political candidates who made Nixon look moderate? How many intelligent people, who made profound statements in their art, grew older and we learned that they had hidden dark secrets or had grown into a nasty, cranky older person?
If you look at the history of bigotry and extremism, it usually begins with a profound disillusionment and then grows from there. Many of the people who flocked to the Nazi Party, in Germany, were average workers who just wanted to earn a decent living and didn't give much thought to eugenics and racial superiority and turned a blind eye to those extremes, because the Party spoke to them about getting back to work and that there woes weren't their fault but the conditions that outsiders pushed upon them. Together, they could restore the "good old days."
I suspect that whatever drives Card now is due to many factors and that it is not unfathomable that someone who could write profoundly about empathy, could gradually lose their own.

Anybody want to start a thread about the Cosby Show? As long as I can bring my own drinks.

Fed up with the frivolity of the last two replies. Feels like more important stuff is being ignored. I mean, Prince Hal and Impulse should be thinking DEEPLY about whether WWE will ever again have two world champions. This is what dominates the discourse in most people’s minds nowadays!

The church backpeddling on it's firmly held beliefs has always been interesting. When I was a member, caffeine was a big "no-no" and Postum was next to godliness When my son lived in Provo, it seemed less against "caffeine" than "coffee." Folks seemed to be chugging down 20-ounce Cokes at 7 in the morning.

There were a few guys in my high school (in the 1980s) from a Mormon family who would not drink anything with caffeine in it, so no caffeinated sodas either. This all reminds me of a conversation I had with a lapsed Mormon acquaintance in my early college years, who said the people she grew up with used to joke that "there are indeed Mormons who drink coffee, coke and beer; we call them Catholics."

Anybody want to start a thread about the Cosby Show? How about Gold Key's adaptation of I Spy instead? (Bill looks WAYYY too happy holding that gun)

Are you really supposed to replace comic bags every few years? I have books in the same bags since 1999 and they look completely new.
This one has been sealed for over 60 years.

That's what comic bag merchants want us to believe. Considering that one of the major gripes environmentalists have with polyethylene terephtalate is that it degrades in something like 500 years only, I think I'll take a chance with my old mylar bags!

There is that one type of bag that had a chemical reaction that yellowed the comics that was worth replacing. I saw it happen on some of mine. I can't speak to the other kind.

I bought a couple of issues of Power Of Shazam! in February or March and it wasn't until a couple of months later that I opened them and found this on all three
I'm curious how the book didn't sustain sun damage but the card backing did

It's the "Silly Putty" effect.
