IMO there's nothing wrong with Cosmic Boy's costume. If Saturn Girl, Projectra, and Shady can wear scanty attire, no reason why C Boy shouldn't Have been able to as well. Frankly I thought Phantom Girl's bell-bottomed costume was ridiculous (for a crimefighter). Equal opportunity exploitation.

And the LSH is "mentioned" only by inference/association--the actual team being referenced on the cover is the Legion of Substiute Heroes (including a list of its team members). A new reader might get the impression the series is about the Sub. team. Also, note that Polar Boy's mistakenly called "Polar Lad" on the cover (his code name is correct in the story itself). Maybe he was originally going to be called PL at the time the cover was lettered. Well, he is NEVER called "Polar Lad" again? Because I know in Teen Titans Wonder Girl is more often than not called "Wonder Chick", so maybe it was intended as a nickname or vice versa? He's never been called "Polar Lad." The other Substitute Legionnaires are correctly named on the cover, so I assume it was just a mistake or the cover was done using an earlier, potential name for the character.

Fortunately, Cosmic Boy got a much better costume later on.

Coldwater, that's not even Cosmic Boy's worst costume. Here he is in his first appearance where he looks like a bad cosplay of himself. And just so nobody has trouble following the story and keeping track of who everybody is, his name is written on his chest!

Wolverine is Marvel's Timber Wolf. I cannot believe how blatant they are/were with that. They even look very similar to each other.

Dave Cockrum was the artist on The Legion of Super-Heroes. Eventually he got tired of working for DC and moved to Marvel where one of his first assignments was revamping the X-Men. Apparently, a lot of the designs in the X-Men were based at least partially on designs for Legion characters. Supposedly Nightcrawler is almost 100% a character Cockrum planned for the Legion.

I also love the way it's not just any magnetism. It's super-magnetism! Take that, Magneto! Eat some 30th-century super-magnetism!

The Legion is my third favorite superhero team after the JLA and JSA. As mentioned in the "40 Years Ago Thread," my first Legion comic was Superboy #214 in October 1975.
My favorite era is the Silver Age. I also liked the Mark Waid reboots, at least in the early stages when he was writing. The only two eras I really don't like are the "5 Year Gap" era and the Abnett & Lanning era.

So how many people here have voted in an LSH election? I'll explain that for the newcomers. The Legion always has a leader, and it's a position they vote on periodically. At times, the readers get to vote! The editors make an announcement on the letters page, the fans vote and a few months latter the editors announce the winner. A lot of the time they include the tally for all the members who got votes! I don't know how far back this tradition goes but they were still doing it in the early 1980s when I was reading it. I voted a couple of times and I voted for Brainiac 5 every time. They resurrected this tradition for the New 52 Legion series. I voted for Dreamy because even though I didn't vote for her in the 1980s, I liked the issues where she was the leader.
I'm a Mon-El voter.

Man! And I thought Stan Lee wrote dramatic characters, and he does, but holy hell. These guys are gloriously dramatic. I love it.

Here's Adventure Comics #306 that Ish mentioned as among the first Legion comics he ever read. The first thing you notice is that Superboy gets the cover and the Legion is merely mentioned across the bottom. The Legion had been around as occasional guest stars in the Superman books for four or five year at this point, but they had only been given their own feature in Adventure Comics a few issues previously, edging out "Tales of the Bizarro World." Good grief, what a cover. Little Ishy would buy anything related to Superman back then. And Stone Boy...Heard he is a real party animal
